We have to determine whether x.|y| > y^2vaibhav101 wrote:is x . modulus y>y^2?
1) x>y
2) y>0
y^2 and |y| are positive irrespective of whether y is +ive or -ive.
y^2 can be written as |y|.|y|
=> x.|y| > y^2 => x.|y| > |y|.|y|
=> x > |y|; cancelling |y|.
If x > |y|, the answer is Yes, else no.
Let's take each statement one by one.
1) x > y
If x = 2 and y = -1, we have x > |y|; the answer is Yes.
However, if x = -1 and y = -2, we have x < |y|; the answer is No.
2) y > 0
We have no information about x. Insufficient.
(1) and (2) together
Since from Statement 2, y is positive and from Statement 1, x > y, we have x > |y|; the answer is Yes. Sufficient.
The correct answer: C
Hope this helps!
