GMAT strategy advice The 550 repeat!

by superdana » Fri Apr 02, 2010 7:36 am
Hello all,

I heard a lot of great things about this website!! It has a lot of amazing information so I thought this is the best place to ask for help!

A little bit about me. I studied engineering at the undergrad level. I think I have a good base in math, even though I haven't done math problems in many years. I dont have much time. I want to write the exam in 2 weeks and I started studying 2 weeks ago.

I took GMAT test early on and here are my scores!
March 20, 550
March 22, 550
March 31, 550 Q 35, V30 ( I didnt have time to finish the quant and guessed the last 10 questions or so)

Between these tests, I studied a LOT. Mostly, I've used the Official Guide. I completed all the questions of Quant, about 50% of the Verbal questions. I reviewed the answers.

I would like to have some advice on what I can do to get a BETTER grade next time I take a practice test.
Is there another book I should review?

It is very surprising to see that you have obtained the exact same score in the three tests you have taken. March 20, 550
March 22, 550, March 31, 550. Although you said that you have studied a lot between these tests, your scores indicate that you probably did not analyze your test results as extensively as you should have. In general, you should go back to your test results to check answers and explanations, specifically for the ones which you got wrong and the ones which you got right for the wrong reasons. I suggest you invest a couple of hours to do that; doing this will enable you to properly identify your focus areas across both the sections, so that you can utilize your two weeks of study time addressing those areas.

My debrief at the following link contains some strategies to analyze your practice tests.

Also, regarding study materials, it will not hurt to refer to another source added to OG, such as Manhattan Review guides or Princeton Review etc for practice problems. However, given your limited time frame, you may want to work more on the OG problems, finishing all problems and reading in details the explanations to all the problems.

Hope that helps you.

Thanks for your reply!

Yeah it's a little strange to get the exact same score every time! I think I might be rushing in my studies- reviewing the answers too quickly. I got Kaplan's math workbook and I'm doing the problems in there now as I finished the quant questions in the OG. In general, I like this book as it offers more general explanations than the OG.

I'm planning on taking another prep test tomorrow.
Have a great weekend!
