Supplementary recommendation

by sudhanshumalani » Sat Sep 22, 2012 6:27 am
Hi,

I founded a company along with another partner few years back. I am not holding any official position in this company as I am currently working in a non profit. I have worked in another company for two years before joining this non profit.

I have few queries regarding the recommendations..

1) Can I include this in my profile as entrepreneurial initiative? How do adcoms verify my role in the company?

2) I am taking 2 recommendations from my current employer and previous employer. I thought of including another co founders name as a recommender, but I can do it only for the colleges that allow supplementary recommendations. How can I make this entrepreneurial initiative more credible in my applications?

Please advice..

Thanks

Sudhanshu

Sudhanshu,

Thanks for the post.

I recommend including this experience on your resume (presuming you worked on this part-time for multiple months) and clearly explaining your role. For example, developing business idea, building business plan, fundraising, hiring team members, and starting up operations are all skills admissions committee members will find valuable. Also, mentioning the company's successes (revenue, profit, number of customers, number of employees) will add credibility to your involvement.

The adcom is not likely going to verify your specific role with the company.

Hope that helps.

Best,
Heidi
