Low GPA - Alternate Transcript Query

by srk228 » Fri May 21, 2010 5:56 pm
Hi,

I've read the suggestions about creating an alternate transcript to try to offset a low undergrad gpa, but I would like to know whether taking a few undergrad classes at Columbia or NYU held any more clout with an admissions officer than taking them at CUNY Baruche or Hunter.

I graduated with a degree in econ from NYU with a low gpa and my concern is that an "A" from Baruche would not be viewed the same as an "A" from Columbia and that coupled with my low undergrad GPA may suggest (to an admissions officer) that I may not cut it at a top bus. school--as in (and not to be rude) I'm capable of doing well at a CUNY but not an NYU.

Is this all in my head?

Thanks!

Dear srk228,

It is not all in your head--you have a legitimate concern. However, it is unclear how much significance is really placed on where you take the classes for your alternative transcript. The main issue for the admissions folks will be how you performed in the course and what course you took; where you take the course is a secondary issue. While I do think there are some admissions officers that will place value on taking the course at a Columbia/NYU over a CUNY, I don't know that it is so great as to justify a significantly higher cost to you. For instance, if the course will cost you twice as much in tuition or the schedule is much tougher with your job, then it might not be worth it. However, if the cost of the course at Columbia/NYU is not significantly more for you, then it might be worth taking it there just to put your mind at ease that you are presenting the strongest application possible.

Good luck,
Lisa
