I'm a Singaporean of Chinese ethnicity (English is my first language) and am trying to get into a Top 5 MBA program in the US. I intend to use the MBA to effectively career switch to Management Consultancy.

GMAT:
710 - 92%, Q50 - 94%, V35 - 74%, AWA 5.5 - 80%

Education:
Bachelor of Applied Science (Engineering), University of Toronto.
Topped my class with a GPA of 3.85.
I was studying on a full scholarship from my government, based on my GCE 'A' Level Results.

Occupation:
2.5 years as an Commissioned Officer in the Military, leading 60 men.
Awarded Top Officer Cadet in my cohort and peer selected to be recipient of Top Military Leadership award.
3.5 years as a Technology Consultant and Project Manager in the Public Sector. Heavy involvement with clients. Manage teams (up to 6) that produce customized solutions for clients.

Recommendations:
I've got a strong display of leadership qualities while in the military.
My public sector bosses have good things to say about my communication and analytical skills.

Extracurricular Activities:
I've planned or helped out in several events aiding the mentally disabled. Nothing more than 1-2 a year though.
I've also been heading a small group of 4 friends in the development of mobile software.
-----

I'm worried about my low Verbal Score of 35. I'm quite poor in my Sentence Correction. Hope I've furnished enough details for an assessment. Anything else I should take note of? Any comments on how I should angle my application will be much appreciated as well.

Thanks for the help!

Dear pundak,

Thanks for the detailed information on your profile. Overall, I think you are a competitive candidate for any business school. However, you are right to be concerned for this year as competition is expected to be fierce. While your verbal score is below the 80th percentile, I'm not overly concerned with it as your AWA is high and you attended school in Toronto, graduating with a high GPA. The best thing you can do is put the effort into making your application as strong and compelling as possible--be sure to convey your leadership and teamwork successes as well as present unique stories to stand out from the competition. Finally, as I tell everyone you need to apply to 1-2 backup schools. Many programs in the 15-40 range are exceptional and offer you what you seek in a business school.

Best of luck,
Lisa

Hi Lisa,
Thanks for your input. I'm glad to hear that my Verbal is not a big concern. I'll be sure to take your advice and concentrate on examples on leadership and teamwork. Thanks.
