Profile evalUation

by NYC Applicant » Thu Sep 10, 2009 5:50 am
Hi, please evaluate my profile. Thanks!

I have worked in financial services for 3+ years and I am currently employed as a credit analyst. My undergrad GPA was low (3.0), but very upward sloping. I took the GMAT and scored a 680 (44Q, 38V), but I am retaking it in two weeks. I want to become a research analyst and my longer term goal is to become a portfolio manager. I have solid extras and some on the job leadership stories for my essays.

The schools I am definitely applying to are:

Stern
Johnson
Tuck

I am also considering McDonough, but don't know if it fits with my Asset Management career goal.

Please give your thoughts on the schools I have chosen and would recommend I consider any other schools for me? I don't HAVE to go to school next year, so going to a sub 25 school is not something I would consider right now.

You will be in heavy competition in the northeast with your background, so make sure you get some bulletproof recommendations. Schools tend to compare applicants with similar backgrounds, so you might want to consider applying to a couple of other schools in the top tier that are farther away from wall street's reach, yet still has wall street recruiters. Duke comes to mind as does UNC and Vanderbilt. The most important thing to do, however, especially with the wall street goal, is to do some research on the firms you are targeting as potential employers and find out where most of the portolio managers hail from. I know that there are a lot of Columbia grads, for example in the Goldman ranks. Firms tend to favor graduates from their alma maters. Hope this helps.
