Work Experience Concern

by KaviM03 » Sun Jul 08, 2012 2:41 pm
Hello,

I would like to apply to HBS and Columbia ED in September for a Fall 2013 admit, however I am concerned about the length of my work experience. I graduated in May 2011 from a top 20 university majoring in Finance with Magna Cum Laude distinction and a 3.7 GPA. I currently have 12 months of full-time employment as an analyst in Finance Valuation Advisory/Consulting along with 2+ years of Part-time Finance internships while enrolled in school. I have solid internships in Finance, a great story for essays and will have great recommendations.

I will have 2 years of full-time experience as of the beginning of the Fall 2013 term. How will HBS/Columbia or any business school view my 1 year and 3 months of work experience as of the application date? My concern is whether business schools would rather applicants with 2+ years of work experience as of the application date or as of the beginning of business school date.

Thank you

You are a bit on the early side, but that does not mean you cannot do it, especially if you can convey some success in the period of time you have been working. Worst thing that happens is they say come back next year...

Kavi,

Though it is possible to get in, it is very unlikely. Candidates with one year of work experience at the time of application need to have some rock star qualifications. In addition to great MBA vitals (gmat/gpa) they are decorated athletes, or side business owners, or award winning prodigy inventors...I think you get the idea.

The real question is why now? Why can't you wait and why is an MBA vital to you now?

And yes you can re-apply, but you put an extra burden on in that you will need to show how you have grown materially since the last application, and that is not always easy to do in the short term.

So, bottom line, I would need to learn more about you say take a shot now, but probability says wait and be patient.

I agree with Alex here. the thing is, you haven't really worked long enough to either gain enough experience, nor for the school to really evaluate how good you might be. Why not give it a bit of time? Take another year to outdo everyone else at work, and prove to them you are HBS material!
