Hi,
I have just graduated from college. I had applied for the fall 2011 session for the full time MBA program in schools such as Yale Silver Scholars, Booth Early Career, along with UCLA Anderson, NYU STern and Darden. This was on the basis of three years of work experience at my family business firm. With this backed up by a 710 in GMAT, I applied knowing fully well that my chances, due to my age constraint, were dim.
Now that I have been rejected admission, I have decided to re-apply two years from now. I wanted to know this: will two years of work experience at my family business jewelry firm be a better option, or working at an MNC or a bank or at a reputed firm in the industry choice be a better option?
I ask you this as my brother,Vinay, who is 5 years elder to me, also applied to b-schools, getting interview calls from Cornell and Manchester, only to be denied admission. Now he had 4 years of work experience and a degree from the Gemological Institute of America for being a qualified gemologist. His application wouldve been at par if not better than mine. So i was wondering whether the kind of work expereince these b-schools are looking for, is met through a family business or through a job of somekind.
Bottomline: What should i focus on from now onwards, to ensure that when i do apply, say 2 years from now, I could increase my chances of getting admitted a good b-school?
