Hello,

I understand that this forum specializes in MBA admission but I could not find any other forum that could give me tips on this matter so any help here is much appreciated.

Due to my lack of work experience and knowledge in the field of business and management, I decided not to apply to MBA but rather a Master and I found these following programs: Msc in Management (more popular in Europe) and the MEM (in the US). And I would like to apply for Fall 2010.

I wonder what the pros and cons of each program are? Someone told me that the Msc in Management might not give you a substantial boost as the MEM. But I like the international exposure aspect of the Msc program, especially from the schools that offer the CEMS route.

Here's my profile:

* International student (I'm from Vietnam actually)
* BS in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology graduated May 2008
* GPA 3.7
* Ivy League School
* heavily involved in research:
- 3 years in uni and currently at a hospital (I've been doing research at a major hospital since graduation)
- 1 publication on a major science journal (this was from a research project when I was at uni)
- an honors thesis during my last year at uni
- 1 potential publication from the research I'm doing at the hospital.

I have not taken the GMAT/GRE yet. Currently working on this.

I have very little to no background in business/management. The reason why i'm thinking of a master in management now is because I got interested in working in the business side (management, consulting, etc.) of the pharmaceutical/biotech industry, rather getting a PhD to do pure research. I hope the master degree (either the MSc or the MEM) can give me a good start.

Thank you.

Hi,

Your profile seems nice and should make you a good candidate at most good schools you would like to target. We have some mentors who are going to schools like LSE (MSc management) and Duke and Dartmouth for MEM. Also, this forum is more focussed on tackling the GMAT and MBA admissions, but we feel the MSc/MEM admissions are daunting as well and applicants need help. Don't worry, we are here :)

As for the MEM, it is more geared towards operational aspects 'in the field'. You might not really get very good management positions overall, but speciaist senior positions in an engineering divison (eg: Team Leader, Sr. Analyst etc.), manufacturing division etc. A Master's in Management is more geared towards operations in business setups. So in the end the choice of which one to go for is upto you.

As for CEMS, it is a very viable and attractive route and highly recommended. However, please note that European B Schools have been very badly hit by the recession and the small size of their individual economies (Eg: England). Hence, you should be a little cautious and apply only the the most prestigious schools. Of course, 2 years down the line things should be better, but then there would be huge competition with people who lost jobs/went to study in 2009/10 with prior work ex. So keep all these factors in mind.

Hope this helps. All the best.

Thank you so much for the advices. They definitely clear things up for me. You mentioned that there are mentors in this forum who are going to LSE for MSc and Duke and Dartmouth for MEM. Can you give me their contact info so that I can ask them more specific questions about the program regarding admission, curriculum as career aspects?

As for the MSc program in Europe, I did some research and these are the schools I'm interested in

UK: LSE, LBS, Oxford, Cambridge, Imperial, Cass, Warwick

France: HEC Paris, ESCP-EAP, Grenoble

Do you have any other recommendations?

Thanks again!

Amidst the confusion of applications for graduate studies, I somehow chanced upon this thread which has been particularly helpful (especially the two links provided in the response as well).

I know that this thread was way back in 2009 but I would definitely appreciate it if it's possible to get in touch with the previous mentors who have been admitted.

I'm highly interested in the MEM program (Cornell, Dartmouth and Duke) and MSE (Stanford).

Appreciate all the help.

Thank you.
