Letters of Recommendation??

by Cinji18 » Tue Mar 23, 2010 11:25 am
I'm feeling uneasy with my letters of recommendation. I know it is best to find someone who has worked closely with me such as a manager, supervisor, or group lead, and to state my intended career goal in getting an MBA. However, although I didn't leave my company on a very negative note, I didn't leave my company on a very positive note either. Therefore, I am hesitated to ask. Any suggestions?

Also, I am looking for a career change that involves a completely different industry and job position. How can my former co-workers actually help me if I tell them?

What about getting a recommendation from someone involved in my desired industry? I am currently involved in a extracurricular community group that does work in the industry I want to get into. Will that work?

Thanks.

Your situation is not an uncommon one, but in general, it's a red flag if you can't get a current supervisor. Where are you working now? Or are you unemployed? Surely there was someone at your former employer who could get in your corner? If the answer is absolutely no, then a vendor, customer or client who can speak to your professional leadership would suffice. As you mention, someone from your community involvement is also do-able, but ideally this type of recommendation would only be one of the two.

Bryant,

Quick question regarding LORs. I don't have a problem like the OP has stated. I left my ex-company on a positive note (infact my director really liked me) and my current MD can vouch for me as well. The real problem is that I am planning to be apply to 8-10 schools (yes! I am going to take the time and effort to do that) and both individuals that I plan to get a reccomendation from are extremely busy people (not to mention that are located two different countries so I will have ask them via e-mail).

I don't think they will be able to write 8-10 LORs. Is there a genric LOR from both I can submit to all schools or will have to find 2 different sets of people for these LORs.

Look forward to hearing from you and thanks in advance for your suggestions on this.

I am currently unemployed but I consider myself self-employed as I am working on my career on my own. There are a couple people I can ask, but I did not work with them in my last department, so it's been a few years. I still talk to them though. Also, they are engineers (I was, too), so what do you recommend the approach to writing the letter?

Thanks.
