Profile evaluation request

by hercules100 » Sun Jul 03, 2011 3:28 am
Hi, Hoping to get reviews on my profile predominantly on whether my GMAT score is good enough for the schools i'm targetting for...

GMAT score - 670 (v35, Q48, AWA 5.5) (second attempt...)
Edu background - BE
Scored 83% overall in Engg (GPA comes close to 3.8) scored top score in 10+ subjects in BE
Work exp - 9+ years IT org from India.
Holding manager level position. Managing $3-4M portfolio.. about 50+ member team.
Have international exposure from US, UK.

Targetting Asian B-schools...predominantly-
Insead
ISB
...should i consider any other schools?? I'm looking for programs which provides 1 year MBA.

Reason for pursuing MBA - Open up doors for areas like marketing, strategic ops within IT org.

thanks.

hercules100,

Your GPA and professional career progress are excellent (lots of leadership). Nevertheless, I would try to raise your GMAT score (only if you think you can), given that you are aiming high. Have you worked with a prep company? You might also consider IE Business School, IMD (they love managers), Cranfield, and/or Oxford.

Good luck,

Hi Paul,
Many thanks for your review. I did join a prep company and spent around 3-4 months of preparation for GMAT. Considering my work schedule i might be challenged in finding time to make another attempt.. All the more i have already taken GMAT twice (got 610 score). What i would like to understand is how much impact (negative?) will my GMAT score play on my overall application package.

thanks.

Your current score will have a negative impact insofar as it is lower than their average scores, so you will need to compensate by being stronger in other areas. It is not a "deal-breaker" but it is a negative/weakness that lowers your odds of admissions success at both schools.

Hope this helps,

Hello

While aiming for top schools then a score above 700 is desirable. So we would advise you to improve your gmat score. Also the GMAT alone won't determine your chances of admission; your work experience plays a vital role as well. You need to ensure that academically you are in a good position. However it is not just the academics but beyond the academics that will help you in determining your candidature.

Do highlight your work experience to tell what you did there like-what were your achievements, what initiative you took, what changes you drove in your workplace etc. So if you can show that in terms of work that you have demonstrated the skills business schools are looking for you could still put in a strong set of essays. Also make sure in your work what you did there like-what were your achievements, what initiative you took, what changes you drove in your workplace etc are exhibited well in your application.

Make sure you follow the 'show rather than tell' principle so that the admissions committee could really understand your strengths and differentiating factors."
