Request for Profile Evaluation

by DmitryZab » Fri May 06, 2011 2:41 am
Hello Stacy/Lisa,

I'd like to get your feedback on my profile.

Male, white, Canadian, 27 year old.
Born in Ukraine, moved to Canada on my 12th birthday.
Speak fluent English, Russian and Ukrainian

GMAT

700
Q 45 - 72%
V 41 - 92%
Essays are a 6

Education
York University Bachelor of Business Administration - General Management Spec Honours completed 2009
York GPA is a weird 8 point system, but essentially it was a C to B- average for the first few years, and B+ average in the last year. It took me 6.5 years to complete the degree because I was working full time while getting it done.

Work Experience

Started as a CSR in a Domino's Pizza, rose through the ranks to manager. Managed one Dominos Pizza for about 6 months full time, then another one for about 18 months full time. This is all while studying in university.

After graduating I was hired into the Loblaw Grad program (Loblaw is the largest food retailer in Canada, competing with Walmart, Costco, etc). The program is 6 months working in stores on the front lines learning the down and dirty side of the business, then 3 months in head office learning the buying side of the business, and then 9 months back in the store in a management role. I am now in this last part of the program, training to become an assistant store manager, who is responsible for the entire store when the store manager is absent. Upon completion of my training I will be placed in a store in this role.

I have never been involved in a club or anything extracurricular clubs aside from a Toastmasters that I joined recently.

I find myself bored in my current job, and so I would to try something a little more challenging, like consulting.

I wish to apply to INSEAD, with Richard Ivey as a back-up.

How competitive is my profile for these schools, and what can I do to make it more competitive? Also, is scoring higher on the GMAT a priority?

Thanks

Dmitry

Dear Dmitry,

There are some strengths and some potential weaknesses to your profile. INSEAD is fiercely competitive, so it is a reach program for any applicant. Your GMAT score is strong, and I'm not sure a higher score will make a significant difference in your ultimate decisions. If you feel you can score at least 20 points higher, then it might be worth a retake as long as you don't sacrifice other aspects of your application. While your current GMAT score indicates your academic aptitude and helps to mitigate your college transcript, you will want to craft a strong optional essay on why your academic performance during school was not stronger. Working full-time during college is a mitigating circumstance and you will want to note the quality of managerial experience gained during this time. However, you will also want to use the optional essay to make your case that your focus in business school will be solely on the MBA program. Ivey is a bit more within reach, but the potential weaknesses in your profile put it between reach and reasonable for you, in my humble opinion. Your lack of extracurricular activities might be an issue; I'm glad to see you have recently joined Toastmasters. The other potential concern will be how your professional experience is viewed by the admissions committees at the schools you target. It is possible your retail industry experience might be viewed as a concern with your aspirations to enter consulting. Thus it will be imperative you highlight the managerial skill set you have gained and show how your experience to date will be valuable to your future career.

Good luck,
Lisa
