profile advice

by maa23280 » Mon Mar 14, 2011 11:40 am
Hi,

I am an international applicant. I have been living in Europe for the past 6 years and working as a technical consultant for a financial software company. I have been all over Europe, NY, Russia, Gulf, Middle East and India (part of my job assignments)
My profile is as follows
Age: 31
GMAT: 680 (taken in 2008)
Current position: Stream lead for integration part
ME in Computer Eng avg 90/100
BE in Computer Eng GPA 3.56/4 (Magnum Cum Laude)
both degrees in my native country from a reputable university (Lebanon)
Work Ex: 3 years as a software developer, 6 years as a technical consultant.
Extra currics (scouting, sports) with leadership positions

I am considering applying to INSEAD and was wondering about my acceptance chances especially that my GMAT < 700. How can I push my profile further, if any?
What about my chances at SBS or IMD?

Thanks a lot in advance for your help.

SBS, INSEAD and IMD all have average GMAT scores at or just below 700, so a 680, while it won't add significantly to your profile, shouldn't be a major hurdle. As a "techie" your first job will be to convince the admissions committee that you have managerial experience, and haven't simply spent six years running code. They will look to see that you have actually managed people and led projects. To the extent that this does not describe your background, you may want to see how you can add people-management skills to your resume.

To the extent that your scouting and sports activities involve leadership, by all means highlight those in your application.

The schools you are targeting are highly competitive. If you are determined to get an MBA in the near future, you need to expand your list to include a safety school or two. If, however, you would not leave your job for anything less than the schools on your current list, that is a valid position, but you have to recognize that those schools turn down several times as many strong, highly qualified applicants as they accept. There are no guarantees.

Applications are made up of many factors. GMAT scores are only one. Be sure to focus on putting your best foot forward in all areas.

Good luck,
Tani Wolff
