Hi,

I am a Female/24/ Indian.
I haven't taken the GMAT/GRE yet. My profile is as follows:

TOEFL: 110/120 iBt (29/25/27/29)

UnderGrad Specialisation: Electronics & Telecommunication Engineering '2009 with a 3.1/4.0 GPA from one of the top 20 Engineering Colleges in the Country.

Work Experience:
2009 - 2011 - Assistant Manager at a leading Telecom Company in India. Will be completing 2 years in July 2011.

2009 - Intern at a Embedded Electronics Company.


EA: - I was selected for the Young Leaders Programme (YLP! 2009) in my Company.
- Was the team leader of the national semi-finalist team in the L'Oreal Shudha Ingenius Engineer, '08.
- I am in the Corporate Magazine Committee serving as the Creative Director (All other members of the team are from the HR Department).
- I am serving as the Youth Professional Ambassador (YPA) for Teach for India at my Company since Aug '10.
- I am in the Guinness Book of World Records for participating in the world's longest painting by numbers
- I was a part of an NGO 'pankhudi' which focussed on education of poor and needy kids to make them self reliant.


Goal: Change of Field. I am currently in the Technical field. I would like to move to Human Resources/organizational Behaviour/Labor Policy Making.


I am looking at full time MBA @: (preference wise)
1. Columbia GSB
2. Cornell : Johnson
3. Michigan: Ross
4. HEC


I wish to pursue an MBA in fall 2012. Could you assess my profile and let me know whether I stand a chance? Also with the kind of profile I have, I would like to know more schools where I could apply and the kind of GMAT/GRE score I would need to stand out.

Hi,

Thanks for your post. I'm glad to see that you have so much involvement outside of your role at work. You extracurricular activities will certainly help set you apart and hopefully will make for some great essay topics. In particular you should aim to use you leadership and team experiences in your essays as these will make for much more unique and personal examples than work related experiences.

In regard to your goals, while it's perfectly normal to seek out an MBA to change careers, you'll want to be quite clear why you want to make the change. Given you've only been working since 2009, the adcom may question the reason around your career change. Why did you enter your current field if your interest lie in HR? Why are you interested in HR? Is it from engaging with the department on the magazine? Why an MBA? Could you achieve this same goal by attending a Masters program concentrated in Human Resources?

Lastly, in order to be competitive for admission at the schools on your list, you'll want to aim to get a minimum 700 on your GMAT. I strongly recommend taking the GMAT over the GRE as most schools seem to prefer the GMAT (even if they accept both).

Answering your questions -

Given you've only been working since 2009, the adcom may question the reason around your career change. Why did you enter your current field if your interest lie in HR? Why are you interested in HR? Is it from engaging with the department on the magazine?
--> My interest do lie in my current field (Telecommunication). However, after 2 years in the organization I haven't found it challenging enough. In the meantime, my association with the magazine has helped me find my true passion. I am sure the magazine is a very small part of what really happens in HR, but employee engagement as a whole has appealed to me. It is challenging and satisfying. I am planning to apply for Fall '12, by then I'd have had 3 years of Work Ex.

Why an MBA? Could you achieve this same goal by attending a Masters program concentrated in Human Resources?
--> The same thought crossed my mind. I have checked out some options as well. However, most of them require a similar undergrad course. Given my engineering background, I do not fit the eligibility requirements for pursuing a Masters which is why MBA is the only way.
