low cgpa in graduation

by arunpanda22 » Thu Feb 24, 2011 7:14 am
hi,

i am an army officer in indian army with 6 yrs experience though i got above 80% in 10th and 12th in national defence academy where i did my graduation i just got a cgpa of 4.4/9

since the academy concentrates on a lot of things other than studies i did not concentrate much on studies in academy.

recently i got hurt while being deployed in CT ops in kashmir

now i am planning to take voluntary permanent discharge and study MBA in finance

Is it possible for me to get admission in top 10 B-schools even with this low gpa??

if yes how much score should i aim for in gmat?

Arunpanda22,

It's unlikely that even with a high GMAT score (720 or higher) you could overcome your low GPA enough to get into a top business school, unless there were specific reasons beyond your control (e.g., full-time work while school, family or health issues etc.) for the GPA. However, if you broadened your focus to top 10 or top 15 schools your chances would increase. A lot will depend on other aspects of your profile. Your military leadership will certainly separate you sufficiently from other male Indian applicants but hopefully there is more to your story as well.

Good luck,

Arun,

You should definitely try to score as close to 750 in your GMAT. Your background will certainly help you differentiate from the IT pool but still, Indians are over represented in MBA admissions process and it will be a challenge. Yes, your GPA might be a point of concern and you will need to address it either through a compelling reason or by building an alternative transcript.
