Hi,
I would really appreciate if you can assess my profile for MS Fin Programs and also suggest me with some which suit best for my profile.
For the start, I am an undergrad and have absolutely no work Experience(except for 4 interns all on quant side)

Acads
Final year student from Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee (Majors in Biotechnology)
GPA - 8.00 / 10
GMAT - 730 (Q - 50, V - 39, AWA - 5.5)

Internships
An internship at Marketing Analytics, Credit Cards at a major MNC Bank -
-aimed at cost saving in marketing campaigns through Predictive Modeling
An internship with a descent B School in Germany - Hypothesis testing in Financial markets.
An Intern with a Startup Investment Consulting Firm in India.
Intern with a Major Drug Production Plant of a Large MNC - it involved optimization of medicine bottle diameters ( A cost Saving project)

College Projects
Project in Protein structure prediction via Bioinformatics.
Project in Protein structure prediction via X-ray Crystallography.
Final Year Project in Predictions and testing for DNA molecules sequences.

Social Service Experience -
A part of social service campaigns through NSS IIT Roorkee, involving the improvement in educational standards in Uttarakhand, India.
One of the Pioneers and Project Manager of Eduslum Program, which was created to find an out of the box solution for elevating standards of education in India.
Managed a team of over 35 Volunteers in Eduslum.

Achievements
3rd youngest in world and youngest in India to hold Chartered Market Technician II from Market Technicians Association, USA.
Part of two Trekking Expeditions - Himalayan Explorer's Club, IIT Roorkee.

My main concern is which MS Finance programs (in USA) should I target and before doing so, should I get any work experience (like applying next year after 1 yr of work exp). I also wanted to know if some lower ranked programs can accept me with this profile and no work exp.

Thanks a ton for reading and really appreciate the time and efforts.

Your lack of work experience will work against you in several ways. First, it will greatly limit the programs to which you can be accepted. Even with your excellent metrics, most of the top schools will be reluctant to accept you. Second, you will be less well-equipped to contribute in the classroom (which is why schools want experienced applicants). Third, you will benefit less from the education because you will not have the frame of reference against which to evaluate what you are learning in the classroom. Finally, you will find networking less effective since you have less to offer your classmates in terms of experience and contacts.

I can say these things because I went to business school right out of college, as did nearly half my classmates. I have often regretted not gaining a few years' work experience first. (Of course, the level and variety of experiences available to women in those days was minimal, I was often asked to take a typing test and was offered secretarial positions even after finishing my MBA from Harvard!)

You are clearly bright and talented and would have both more to offer and more to gain by working before you go to graduate school.

That said, there are some schools that will accept 2-3% of their students straight out of college. You have some excellent credentials and might want to explore the possibility directly with your targeted programs. Some of the top schools will give deferred admission. That is, they would accept you for a class starting two years from now if you would get a strong job in the interim. You might explore that option.

Good luck,
Tani Wolff

Thanks a ton..! Your reply was of a great help.

I am deciding to apply to 1 top and 1 mid ranked program ( mostly MIT and Purdue). If I do not get accepted in these, will go for 1 yr of work exp and apply to MIT again. Now does that seem a good approach?

Again thanks a lot for guiding and keep up the good work...!

That will work. Just remember that even Purdue turns down 2/3 of its applicants so you may have to fall back on a couple of years' work. If that happens, it could be a blessing in disguise.
