My profile
GMAT-630 Q42 V35 AWA 4.5
GPA-3.09 from a State School in NJ
BA in Mathematics, BA in Communication(2 degrees)
29. white male, 3 years in IT doing Computer Support

Was accepted into

CUNY-Baruch College(MS Business Computer Information Systems)
Fordham Graduate school of Business(MBA Information Systems program)
Stevens Institute of Technology(Computer Science MS program)

Also applying to
iSchool at Drexel University, Information Systems, requires the GRE.

Should I apply to NYU Stern for the Part Time MBA program? I am very interested in their MBA. Drexel is my number 1 choice, with Baruch being 2nd because of the cost, and proximity to my job. I would prefer an MS, but would consider an MBA from a reputable program, such as NYU or Fordham.

Thank you.

Hello,

From the information you've provided and from my extensive experience working NYU Langone applicants, I'd consider NYU's part-time program a very high reach.

However, the programs you've been accepted to are excellent, and you have some good choices among them if you decide to forego the Langone app. Congratulations on your acceptances!

Best regards,

Hi,

I am thinking about applying to NYU Stern (Langone Part-time) for Spring 2012.

I am 28, with 7 years of experience (5 of which have been a Fortune 100 financial services company in NYC) in Corporate Finance / Business Analysis. I am considered a top-performer with high potential (but perhaps a bit too junior/young to necessarily qualify for the Executive MBA program) at my company, and would be able to get extremely good recommendations.

I did my undergrad at NYU Stern, but only posted a 2.77 undergrad GPA which I believe is completely not reflective of my potential (I was very distracted during college and did not take my studies seriously). I did a double major in Finance, and Accounting, and also did a concentration in Operations Management (one of 5 undergrads in my class who did it, as the concentration is with MBA students. I posted A-, A, and a B+ in the 3 classes I took at the MBA level, so coursework is not a problem).

I'm pretty sure I can post a 700+ score on the GMAT (my SAT score was 1440 out of 1600 back in 1998, and I generally do well on those type of tests). Do you think I have a reasonable shot of being accepted at NYU Stern? My only fear is my low undergrad GPA, which would inhibit my stellar work/extracurricular resume (I'm also on the board as CFO of a non-profit with annual budget of $500K) -- otherwise if it weren't for my GPA, I'd probably apply to Wharton, Harvard, etc.... But at same time, I can't really afford to go full-time (I have a family to support).

Hello,

I do think it makes sense to apply. The low GPA is a definite weakness, but assuming a strong GMAT the candidacy looks great otherwise. Moreover, the low GPA at least was in rigorous program. You should write a succinct optional essay on the GPA and simply state the facts, plus draw the adcom's attention to the good grades in MBA courses and other factors showing that the low GPA is not reflective of your true abilities.
