Hi everybody,

Just to start off with a side note: I just took my GMAT a couple months ago and got some great stuff out of the boards (thanks everyone!).

I'd love to get everyone's opinion on my question here

So originally I was going to apply to start during the Fall 2012. But due to some new circumstances I would prefer to start 2011. However, my biggest reservation is that my work experience seems rather light compared against the average profile.

My Profile:

Age: 23
Gender: Male
Current City: Austin, TX
Nationality: Chinese (Born in the US)
GMAT: 710 (Q48, V40, AWA:6)
GPA: 3.84 - Marketing [Chinese Minor] (Top 10 Business Undergrad)
Full Time Work Experience: 2 years
Industry: High Tech (Fortune 50)
Job Function(s): Marketing/Operations

In undergrad I was consistently involved in 3 organizations and held varying leadership positions through my 4-years, I also worked as a student career advisor in our business school. I play piano, violin, drums (if this helps with my story) and have been involved in volunteering/serving the community since graduating (through my Church, and going through other organizations).

I currently live in Texas so UT is a great option (plus I'd get in-state tuition!) but my target schools are Berkeley, Chicago, and NYU. UCLA is definitely a consideration as well. My GMAT score is right at the average for a top tier school, and my GPA is very strong compared to the typical profile for their current MBA classes, but conversely my work experience is 2-3 years less than the average.

What do you think my chances are for my target schools given that I'd only have about 2.5 years of experience at the time of application submission?

Would waiting one more year significantly increase my chances?

What actions do you think I should take to improve my profile as an applicant?

I'm really grateful there are resources like beatthegmat out there. Thanks a bunch in advance everyone!

Eric

Nice background and very good credentials - I think you can choose to apply this year or the next. If you apply next year, plan your year very well to fill any gaps (such as the breadth and quality of professional experience). On the other hand, if you have had a rich 2.5 years of work exp already, you can apply this year. Top schools are willing to bring in younger applicants if they see a lot of promise and maturity. All the schools you mentioned are in your range.

I can be more specific if you provide details of your work profile and key accomplishments so far.

Thanks Anurag! I appreciate the quick response!

Work Profile:

Year 1- I went through a leadership rotational program, during which I got to spend a rotation with our sales groups, along with a rotation as an assistant merchandiser with our retail group. During the program I was recognized with a few small awards, like sales performance, quality of work, etc.

Year 2- After completion of the program I was hired into a different internal line of business's marketing group as a Merchandiser with the unique opportunity of managing a team of four (I still manage this team, please note that they do not report to me in terms of HR, but they do take their direction/instructions from me, so functional management). During the first full quarter as part of this marketing group I was formally awarded and recognized by our Director for execution, hard work, etc.

Currently- I was recently just promoted to a Marketing Operations role and in addition to my former duties I am now in charge of a number of process improvement projects within my group and am also working towards getting a Six Sigma/"Lean" type certifcation.

Thanks for the profile evaluation! Let me know if you need me to clarify anything further.

I think you have some good accomplishments and I am sure examples/stories to go with those. I particularly like your leadership experience. I am assuming that you will have no difficulty finding strong references. Are you still involved in significant extracurricular activities? That will help. Are you clear about the post-MBA path you want to take? Is it connecting the dots with your current work? If the answers are yes and yes, then I suggest you apply this year and do a bang up job on your application.

If you are uncertain about the future career path and/or your future career is quite different from what you do today, you may want to wait an year and build your plans and credentials appropriately.

Hope that helps.
