Cal Grad w/ Low GPA, High GMAT...

by calbears2006 » Thu May 06, 2010 1:36 am
Hi there,

Thank you in advance for all your help! I graduated from UC Berkeley a few years back, and am now looking to make the transition to business school. I'm feeling worried because I earned quite a low GPA at Cal, and I'm not sure if my undergraduate grades will prevent me from getting in the door at top 25 business schools such as Chicago, UCLA, NYU, USC, and Wisconsin among others.

Here's a look at my stats:

UC Berkeley GPA: 3.1 / 4
Undergraduate Major: Economics
GMAT: 780 (AWA 5.5)
Work Experience: Three years at a top 10 private equity firm in the U.S. specializing in value-added multifamily real estate investments. My responsibilities have included financial and market analysis of potential investment projects, budget forecasting, and contract review.
Certifications: Licensed California Real Estate Broker
Extracurriculars: Mainly, I'm involved in a few local business clubs, I'm a participant in a few tennis and basketball leagues, and I'm active in a local volunteer organization. I can provide more details if it would help you get a better understanding of my profile.

In regards to the low GPA, I performed fairly well in undergraduate business courses, but got absolutely brutalized in a number of foreign language, history, and philosophy classes.

With the information above, would I have a fighting chance at any of the top 25 schools? I've always regretted my substandard undergraduate GPA, and I hope it's not going to affect my chances as I begin applying for B-school!

Thank you so much for taking the time to read this, and I look forward to hearing back from any of you!

Regards,

James

James,

Given your outstanding GMAT, high grades in business classes, and strong professional experience, I think you do have a chance in the top 25, particularly outside the top 10. Even the top 10, which would be a stretch, isn't out of the question.
