Marine Corps Officer seeking MBA

by eje0731 » Wed Oct 21, 2009 7:47 pm
Hello,

Here is a cliff notes version of my story...

I earned my B.S. in Psychology from Old Dominion University in Virginia 5 years ago. Due to an overall lack of motivation and persistence, my GPA was a 2.3

However, I was able to meet the requirements of the Marine Corps officer selection board, and with a lot hard work and discipline earned my commission. Currently, I'm a ground supply/logistics officer.

I've already served 3 years, and plan on separating from the military after my 4 year commitment is up. I would like to supplement the prodigious amount of leadership experience that Marine Corps has provided with formal business training in the form of an MBA.

I scored 700 on the GMAT, and have aced a number of undergraduate level business courses such as marketing and economics. However, I'm concerned that my low undergrad GPA will keep me out of a top 25 MBA program. What kind of program can I realistically expect to get into?

Thank you,
Ed

Dear Ed,

Thank you for your service. I think you will find that your background will be attractive to many schools, despite a low GPA, including top 25 programs. Your GMAT is strong and your recent coursework demonstrates your classroom ability. I would suggest having a mix of schools: 2-3 in the top 20 and 1-3 outside the top 20. Of course, your decisions will all hinge on a great set of essays, recommendations and interview.

Best of luck,
Lisa
