Profile Evaluation, Please.

by SnehaC » Wed Oct 21, 2009 4:43 pm
Hello,

I am currently in an undergraduate program (Junior Year) and am not looking to get an MBA quite yet because I know I won't be able to reap the full benefit of such education since it is designed for people with work experience.

But, I do know that with my desire for leadership and aptitute in taking charge, I will pursue that career path in my future eventually.

Right now, I am looking into the Harvard 2+2 Program and the accelerated admission at Indiana University (Kelley school of Business) - with Harvard being my first choice.

My stats are below:

GPA: 3.65 (Hoping to make it a 3.7+ by the time I apply. I have two more semesters and plan on making straight A's - I've only had weaknesses in my GPA in one semester of college, which I plan to address in the additional information essay, stating that due to overhwhelming responsibilities, I wasn't able to demonstrate as strongly as I was capable of. I have also shown growth since this semester because after a certain point, I have made all A's with an occasional B)

GMAT - I have not taken it yet, but I know I am capable of getting atLEAST a 680. I have ranged at ~560 on Kaplan practice tests, which I hear tend to be harder. But I am definitely shooting for a 750+

Work experience - By the time I apply, I will have had an year and a half of part-time experience at Blue Cross and Blue Shield as a business analyst. This has given me a lot of experience that I think will give an edge in my application.

I believe I can provide a strong elevator pitch which explains why exactly I want to go there and why I want to do it now. (Basically because I want to earn enough money and be successful enough at a young age in my life so I can use my success and position to help those that aren't as fortunate to get an education in third world countries)

I've also had leadership experience, many volunteer activities, community involvement, etc.

My current major is Information Systems.

So I guess my question is, what are my chances of being accepted into these 2 programs?

How can I stregthen my abilities as to prove myself as a strong candidate for admission?

Hi and thanks for your note. I can't really say what your chances are at HBS and Indiana (except to point out that HBS 2+2 is extremely competitive) but I can make a few observations.

The first and main one is that talking about going to business school to make a lot of money -- even for a charitable purpose-- just isn't going to work. Yes, if you are successful, then chances are that you will make a lot of money. But, do yourself a favor and back away from talking about that at the beginning.

A secondary thought is that, as far as credentials are concerned, they look very strong. So...just make sure that you get some internships (that is, if you are doing something beyond BC/BS) and the like to make sure that you are well positioned.

All in all, except for the financially-focused future it sounds like applying probably makes sense.
Keep me in the loop about your thinking and let me know if you have any more questions.
