MBA or MSA

by aliyasin » Mon Oct 19, 2009 7:18 am
I just started my MBA at an average school in the Northwest. I had a 650 on my GMAT and got a GA that is why I came here as it is very cheap now. I also got admission in some good schools on East Coast but could not afford it. Now when I got here I found that MSA (Masters of Science in Accountancy) program here is better than the MBA program so I am looking to switch. I have already passed CFA level I and have done pretty well in college level accounting. I am also looking to start my CPA too. I just want to pick the program with which I can get a job easily after I graduate because with my Econ College degree I had a very hard time finding a job although economy was bad too.

Please let me know about it.

Thanks in advance.

Dear Ali,

Your job prospects depend mostly on you and the effort you put into your job search, not what degree you have. There is something to be said for geography and school reputation factoring into your search though. If you want to stay in the northwest U.S., then either program should have connections to companies in the area. Whether or not you should transfer to a master's degree in accounting is highly dependent on what you want to do with your career. If you want to pursue an accounting career, then it is a fine option. If you do not want to pursue a career in accounting, then you would be better off in the MBA program. You also need to check the prerequisites for the MS in Accounting program as graduate accounting programs often require a substantial amount of undergraduate accounting courses.

Good luck,
Lisa
