Need advice on this badly!

by target_mba2010 » Sat Sep 26, 2009 10:41 am
Hi,
I have given my first attempt of GMAT last week and scored a disappointing 590(Q 42,V 29).
A brief of my profile-
I am an Indian male Techie with 2 yrs of work experience in India's leading software firm.I have a GPA of 2.4(out of 4) of my undergraduate engineering degree.I have a limited extra curricular achievements to show on my resume which includes supporting a NGO financially.
I am interested in pursuing MBA in marketing/communications/advertising.
I am planning for a second attempt of GMAT in next 2 months time. Before that, need some clarifications about the following queries:
1. What are my chances of getting into a descent B school in US with the above profile and an improved GMAT score?
2. If point 1 is valid, what should be the minimum score I should be looking for? If it isnt, what are options that I have in the present scenario with the score of 590?
Any thoughts are highly appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

target_mba2010,

Thanks for your note. You have a tough situation because you have both a low 2.4 gpa and a low 590 gmat. Even top 50 business schools in the US have average gpas of 3.2+ and average GMAT scores of 620+

I strongly suggest that you wait another year before your apply to school. During the year, you should:

1) build an alternate transcript by taking business foundation courses (statistics, accounting) and getting A's.
2) study hard and get a GMAT score over 660.
3) continue to perform well at work (hopefully taking on leadership roles)
4) deepen your extracurricular involvement

By doing these things, you will be more competitive at top 50 US business schools next year.

Sincerely,

Eliot Ingram
