680 (Q45/V38)- do I have a shot at Columbia?

Hi, I just took the GMAT today and got a 680. At the moment, I'm not sure how I feel about my score... I was wondering if someone could evaluate my profile. I would like to apply for Fall '10 to the following schools: Columbia, Wharton, Kellogg, and NYU.

I have 4 yrs of sales experience in the financial services industry and 1 year of non-profit/volunteer experience abroad. I went to school at U Oregon (major Econ, GPA 3.7). Do I have a shot at the schools above?

Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks a lot!

There is no guarantee that you will get 'in' Columbia with a 720 score or a 680 score. From what information I have, it shows that you have scored pretty well in math - so you will be able to sit through the quantitative part of your MBA class.

Your verbal scores are weak, thus committee will take an extra effort to read your essays to see how well you can demonstrate your written communication skills. You will also need to be careful during your interview process as they will want to see how good you are when it comes to verbal communication.

Resume, GMAT score, work experience, application, essays, letter of recommendation and interview-> together are your deciding factors.

English is not my native language, though I will be applying to MBA programs as a US citizen. Looking at my score break down, I thought I had done poorly on the quant section (76%) vs the verbal section (84%). Is that not the case?

I don't think I have it in me to get higher than a 700 (based on my practice CATs); so, do you think it's worth giving it another shot, or am I better served spending that time working on my applications?

The good thing about taking the GMAT twice is the effort. Schools like to see that you're serious about an MBA and that you have put in a substantial effort to get in - so a second attempt will help.

But, there are other ways to show that you really want to get into a specific school. I actually got the same GMAT score and got accepted into my top choice (Tuck) using these same techniques.
