career advice w.r.t MBA

by shadesofgray87 » Thu May 21, 2009 9:43 am
Hi,

I am a fresh graduate from a very good university with a honours degree in engineering with a gpa of 3.46.
I want to apply for an MBA but alot of people have adviced me to pursue a career first and gather work experience.
The thing is, I receive a lot of graduate management trainee programs for 1 year.Should I join them - as in will they useful for my mba, provided I wish to apply for mba in 2-3 years?
Thanks!

Dear shadesofgray87,

Training programs for new graduates are generally good experience as you begin your career. What will be important is for you to show you gained depth and breadth of knowledge in the industry and progressed at the normal/above normal pace for folks in the program.

Good luck,
Lisa

hi, thanks for the advice!

But should I consider a job more related to my engineering field ?
Because these training programs are just 1 year and wouldnt it be insufficient to get into a top 20 or 30mba program ?

My other stats are as follows

- 760gmat
- 3.45 gpa at a very good university
- i like to do volunteer teaching very often but I dont have any ecas from college ( except for excellent undergraduate research records and 6 mth internship at a good company )

What are the areas i should improve upon to consider getting into a top 20/30 b-school?

You need to do whatever job opportunity appeals the most to you and makes the most sense for your long-term career goals. Many people take jobs that are not necessarily the norm for their undergraduate degree. As long as you have a good rationale for why you took a particular job, then you should be fine.

Whether or not you apply with only one year of experience is up to you. However, you do need to have a legitimate reason for why you want to enter business school with less than 2+ years of experience. I would also encourage you to get involved with some sort of community activity or organizations outside of work as soon as possible. You will want to show involvement for a good amount of time and be able to discuss the organization(s) in detail with regards to your involvement.

Good luck,
Lisa
