Profile Evaluation

by Ravishankar » Fri Jan 30, 2015 6:25 am
Hello,
My name is Ravi Shankar from Bangalore India. I have roughly 3 to 4 years of work experience that includes 1 and half years of entrepreneurial experience. I have worked with Hewlett Packard from June 2013 to December 2014 and have managed a enterprise called TechFire(IT/ITES) based in Bangalore since November 2012 until December 2013. However said that, the registration process and other ground work started atleast 4 months prior. I have also involved myself in a lot of community service and have managed to co-found 2 Non profit Organizations dealing with empowerment and Sustainability. I have been running one of them since January 2013 and other started recently. One of my social venture called sun for life ( we are setting up solar dryers in a village to empower women and help them be self sustainable). This is about my work experience and not sure how helpful this information would be.

Next my education, I did my Bachelors in Visveswraya Technological University (2006-2010) graduating with 63% and completed my MS from University of Houston Clear lake (2011-2012) with a gpa of 3.42. During my MS I was elected as Treasurer for Indian Students Association for the 2011-2012 tenure and also worked as a Teaching Assistant during spring 2012 semester.

The GMAT I did take in the month of September and managed to score 590 (Q-42,V-30,AWA-5.0) though the retake GMAT backfired and got identical scores I decided would apply with the same score and hope for the best to happen.

I have applied to University of Houston, Stern, University of Notre Dame, University of Pittsburgh and University of Buffalo SUNY. What you think are my chances here.

Please provide me with your inputs and suggestions on how do I proceed. If any other information will be needed, will be more than happy to provide.

Thanks!!

hoping to hear from you soon

Hey Ravi,

I feel your profile is quite diverse and your involvement in entrepreneurial ventures and especially community service looks impressive. From your list of schools I can predict only University of Houston is within your reach. It is difficult to predict chances without reading your application. What about your post MBA goals? If you are considering Entrepreneurship then you can also consider applying to Babson, Oxford, Cambridge. Hope this helps.

Hey there!

Thanks for sharing your background. First the bad news, although this is probably nothing you don't already know, but your academic profile is holding you back. Significantly. Average performance at average schools don't compensate for a sub-600 GMAT. Hate to say this, but even with an MS, your low stats put you towards the back of the pack.

Your work experience is interesting. The year and a half at HP i ok, but your entrepreneurial venture will get any ad com's attention - question is, how did it do? What did you learn from it? You'll need the answers to some of these deeper questions to shine throughout your application.

I'd consider your involvement to be fairly strong across the board - hopefully you went in depth to explain your leadership capacity and how you truly affected these organizations and the people/mission they serve.

Both Stern and Mendoza are stretch given the information you shared, so it's good that you applied to the others. Hope this information helps! Let us know if you'd like to chat about the final step of your application - the interview!

@Ammanish- Thank you for your insight. Yes I am looking into entrepreneurship post MBA. However I am considering working with a not for profit organization for a couple of years before getting full time into social entrepreneurship.

@Bhavik- Thank you for the feedback. I definitely knew that GMAT is currently a weak link in my profile. However I am trying to do my best to showcase my other areas of strength. I am trying to do my MBA in Social entrepreneurship and realized these 2 were the best.. I have also mentioned, if necessary I wouldnt mind retaking the gmat.. However said that, currently I really am not in a position to re-take my gmat. I have done my best to putforth my profile well I believe... Your suggestions and feedback will be extremely valuable. I will keep you posted on the progress...

Hey Ravi.
What a legacy of a name my friend!

Now, I'm afraid the advice about the GMAT was right. I understand that you believe you are not in position to retake the GMAT, but the fact of the matter is that you will get in no school that is worth your while abroad with your GMAT. They just have too many better options. Look at the GMAT not so much as a part of your application and profile (which it ALSO is) but rather as a minimum threshold.

And without a 650 at least, the schools you are looking at will be the ones that can't get you a decent job anywhere, and then you might in that case wont to research options outside the MBA.

Sorry to be a bearer of bad news my friend,

Jon

@Jon
You were bang on... I accept with every word you said and had already decided to retake my GMAT ASAP and make sure I get a better score than last time.. I am targeting 700+ to be very precise.. Thanks that definitely helped :) Apart from my GMAT score how do you think my profile spans out??
