Ivy league Grad - Work ex dilemma

by kawakawa89 » Tue Jan 28, 2014 2:20 pm
I am an Ivy league graduate with a Master's in Engineering. I have a 740 on my GMAT (should I retake?) which I took last year before graduation. Now I have a couple of questions I hope you can help me with -

- My undergrad GPA is 8.96/10 from a decent Indian university, but I have a very low grad GPA of 3.19/4.00 from an Ivy league school(rigorous engineering program). Does this mean I will never crack the top schools- tier 1 and 2?
- I am working as a design engineer for an automotive company in the US right now, will my techie-tech work ex put me at a disadvantage?
- Should I apply for a general MBA or an MBA in Operations (considering my engineering background-coursework, also certifications in Six Sigma and similar)
- I am considering going back to India and starting something on my own - a real estate investment firm (family ties will help, considerable know-how), or a restaurant (with a partner). Will unrelated work experience hurt my application?

I am in a quandary as the jobs being offered to me in the US are hard core engineering jobs and there is not much opportunity for growth. I would like to apply in 2016 or 2017( with roughly 2 and a half years of ex under my belt). I would really appreciate if you could guide me with some of my queries.

Okay, so first of all I think things look a LOT better than you think.

Do not even THINK about taking the GMAT again. Your score is AWESOME! Just celebrate! You are 20+ points higher than average of top tier schools, there's no real advantage to just "collecting points".

- My undergrad GPA is 8.96/10 from a decent Indian university, but I have a very low grad GPA of 3.19/4.00 from an Ivy league school(rigorous engineering program). Does this mean I will never crack the top schools- tier 1 and 2

You have an awesome UG GPA. I assume your Ivy League school is a Masters? I wouldn't worry about your grades there, because a) UG is more important b) your grades are not great but are fine c) more importantly, you went to an ivy league.

- I am working as a design engineer for an automotive company in the US right now, will my techie-tech work ex put me at a disadvantage?
I don't really think the "techie work" is a big disadvantage. If you were IT and coding, maybe but you are doing something else entirely.

- Should I apply for a general MBA or an MBA in Operations (considering my engineering background-coursework, also certifications in Six Sigma and similar)
There's no "MBA in Operations" although yes some specialize in this. An MBA is an MBA. Apply to the schools that will get you to your goals.

- I am considering going back to India and starting something on my own - a real estate investment firm (family ties will help, considerable know-how), or a restaurant (with a partner). Will unrelated work experience hurt my application?
This will only HELP and not hurt. And the more interesting the work, the better.

For the moment don't worry tooooo much about advancement... work for a few years, in whatever you like, do well, see if you can get some leadership experience, and as long as you are doing well and advancing you can get even into a Top MBA.

Best,
JF

Thanks a lot for your reply. I will not take the GMAT again.

My Ivy league education was a Master's degree in Engineering. Just a couple of more doubts regarding my work ex - I am really keen on quitting my job and starting my own venture, but like I mentioned it might be completely unrelated to my field (thinking of starting from scratch a real estate investment consulting firm). Do you think this would reflect negatively on my profile, can I justify it in my essays? Where would I stand when compared to someone who worked for Goldman, Deloitte etc? Also do you think I realistically have a shot at tier 1, tier 2 schools or are they too much of a stretch?

I took GMAT early because now I just want to concentrate on doing everything in my power to build up a profile for a top B school.
