Down to the wire...should I retake?

by PhillyST88 » Wed Dec 11, 2013 6:02 am
Hi There!

I'm hoping to get some advice on whether or not I should retake the GMAT exam (applying R2) and risk sacrificing some time on my application essays.

Background - 25 year old female, 3 yrs work experience in government and consulting, strong GPA from a Top 40 school (small, liberal arts), great recommendations...hoping to apply to Kellogg, Stern, and USC.

On my first GMAT attempt, I scored a 640 overall (Q39, V38, IR3, AWA 5.5). I spent over a month studying all of my prep material and felt really confident going into my second exam. However, a family member had passed away three days before my exam and I think the emotions from that weighed heavily on my performance. I ended up going down to a 620 (Q38, V38, IR8, AWA 6.0) despite all of my prep and hard work. I had been scoring 670 - 700 on my GMAT Prep exams a week prior to the test date.

My dilemma is that applications are due in less than a month and I don't know whether I should try to squeeze in one more GMAT attempt (my 3rd) to get a higher score. Verbal has never been an issue for me, but with all of my prep I felt I could boost my quant score last time but it just didn't happen.

Do AdComs weigh heavily on quant scores? I know they look at your highest score, but unfortunately my first attempt resulted in a very low IR score of 3. Would the Admissions Committee take into consideration a high IR score on another attempt despite the overall GMAT score being lower? Would a high IR/AWA combination help prove my case that I, despite what the GMAT says, can succeed at quant?

Any advice would be most appreciated. I'm still trying to figure out whether or not to address my low quant score in the optional essay, but I'm nervous that drawing attention to it will do me more harm than good.

You ask all pertinent questions.

Overall, I recommend you retake the test because only 10% of admitted applicants to USC Marshall scored less (https://classic.marshall.usc.edu/ftmba/a ... rofile.htm). With NYU Stern that 10% mark is much higher at 680 (https://www.stern.nyu.edu/programs-admis ... s-profile/) and at Kellogg only 5% of the class scores a 640 or less (https://www.kellogg.northwestern.edu/pro ... ofile.aspx).

Admissions committees look at GMAT quant. scores in conjunction with you academic transcripts to see how you performed in calculus and statistics and your professional experience to see the analytical nature of your work. For more information read MBA Evaluation Criteria.

But per https://www.mba.com/us/the-gmat-exam/gma ... -mean.aspx a 39 translates to 46% which is too low for those schools.

Good luck on the retake,
