profile evaluation

by karum84 » Fri Sep 19, 2008 6:46 am
Hi ,

Iv written down a brief of my profile. It would be great if I could get my profile evaluated.

Im working with a company which is into avionics(Silver Software). I am a software engineer and have been doing a lot of testing and some development work over the past two years. I have not held any leadership or managerial role with regard to my work. I have been involved with big names like Airbus-380 and Boeing but the work has primarily been testing.I will be getting a good letter of recommendation from my project lead which will address teamwork, responsiblity and other relevant characteristics.

I have demonstrated a lot of leadership qualities outside work in my company. I am the secretary of my company's extracurricular club.(the club is responsible for organising events for the employees). The senior management in my company is impressed with the way i have handled things and have let me know abt the same. I intend gettin a letter of reco from the HR head of my company as he is well aware of these things and is more than willing to help me out. I am also into a CSR(corporate social responsibility) where we do our bit to the society. I am also one of the content managers of the company newsletter.(the company i work for is not a very big one. it has a strength of around 300 in India UK and Spain). I have had no international exposure so far.

I teach maths to MBA students of a certain school during the weekends (for their aptitude tests during placement season ). I also do some content management for a foundation called the TWI foundation. It Basically involves setting question papers for companies which recruit fresh engineers. Also would it be useful to mention something about coffee estates ?I have had a lot of exposure to coffee estates and have played my role in managing the family estates. I also brew about 5 varieties of home made wine. Should i give a lot of importance to these points or do i keep it at a surface level?
my acads are fairly ok. i have a 730 in the GMAT and 3.89 GPA in my engineering. Also during my engineering i was the CR(class representative) for two years. My role was one where in i was a point of contact between the students and the faculty. It also occasionally included scheduling classes convenient for both faculty and students. I have been participating in a lot of inter-college fests and have won a lot of competitions. I was also actively involved in organising events during my college fest.

Im really interested in Brand management and would like to know the schools which are good for the same. i have not had any sort of experience in brand management and thats a concern.

Personally i feel that my work ex is my weakest link? Can it be compensated by the other areas?

It would be great if i could get an opinion on my profile and a list of schools known for their brand management programs.

Thanks a lot.
Karum

Dear Karum,

Your work experience is not a negative, per se, but you have to find a way to highlight the managerial, transferable skills instead of getting hung up on the technical aspects. It is unfortunate you cannot point to any leadership experiences, but I encourage you to think about that some more as well as leverage your leadership in activities outside the work place.

The programs most known for brand management are geographically clustered in the midwest of the US and France--basically near consumer good companies. That is not to say programs not located in these areas are not worthwhile, as many are and have a successful track record with graduates entering brand, but these areas are a good place to start. Schools like Kellogg, HEC, Indiana, Minnesota, and INSEAD are probably the ones you should start researching. After those, programs in New York (Columbia & NYU), California (UCLA, USC), and other EU programs are worth exploring depending on what else you are looking for in a program.

Best of luck,
Lisa

Hi Lisa,
Thanks a lot for your inputs!:)
Also, do you think I should stress on the coffee estates and wine making experience . I do have in depth knowledge about coffee estates. Would it be a value add to a B school to have a person with an estate background?

Thanks a lot again.

You should use anything from your background that will make you look good and help to distinguish you. If you have examples from your coffee estates and wine-making that will highlight your skillset, then you should use them.

Good luck,
Lisa
