Unusual Profile eval please

by sansai » Sun Oct 05, 2008 3:35 am
Hi

GMAT - 640 (Q - 46, V - 31, AWA - 4.0)

Work Exp - Over 6.5 years in IT Enabled Services and BPO (About 5 years in a supervisory role).

How would the adcoms look at my profile

I am targeting the following programs:

UT Dallas - MS MIS
UT Austing - MBA
Texas A&M - MBA+MS MIS
Babson - MBA
Melbourne Business School

Do you think you could provide me with some inputs (with the limited information that I have provided ) on whether I need to reconsider my list or whether I need to consider re-taking the GMAT.

Thanks in advance.
SS

Dear SS,

I think your school list is fine, but I do think you should retake your GMAT to try and increase your score. International students make up a large percentage of the applicant pool which is much greater than the percentage that will be admitted to the program. As a result, you have to find a way to distinguish yourself from the other applicants to be offered a seat. Consequently, many of these other applicants will have a similar profile with a higher GMAT score. Finally, you need to present a compelling story in your applications as to why you want an MBA, what your career goals are, and why a particular program is a good fit for you.

Good luck,
Lisa

Thank you for taking your time out to reply on a Sunday. I really appreciate that.

I'll definitely work on the areas that you have suggested.

Hi Sansai,

MBA Selection Committees in general take a holistic approach when assessing applications. They will consider work experience, GMAT, personal statements, academics, referee reports. As long as you meet minimum requirements, then all these items will contribute to the assessment. Your GMAT is likely to be high enough for consideration - but it does depend on the strength of the rest of your application. You would only consider retaking the GMAT if you wanted to strengthen your application (to ensure admission) or if you wanted to be considered for a scholarship (where above average results are required)

Your academic background in Biology would not be a disadvantage. Most MBA look for diversity when recruiting students. The learning in an MBA classroom is very interactive and experiential, and student learns a lot from peer interaction. For this to be successful, the cohort must comprise a good mix of students from different academic, industry and cultural backgrounds.

The list of schools is a personal choice based on your future goals. I suggest you do thorough research on the student experience, curriculum options, placement results, and choose schools that match your preferences.

Dear Ms Parkin

Thank you for providing me with invaluable insight to approach the process. It really does make a lot of sense now.
