Profile Evaluation for Top 10 schools in US.

by aztec » Thu Aug 30, 2012 5:58 am
Hi There,

I would like to get a feedback on my profile. I am contemplating whether I should apply this year or wait for an year to strengthen my profile. I am targeting top 10 schools in US.

Please find the details :

Nationality : Indian

Undergrad GPA : 7.85/10. Graph is haphazard(increase in GPA after 2nd year, decrease after 3rd, increase after 4th)
Undergrad School : Always ranked in top 10 tech schools in India at par with IIT's.
Undergrad Degree : Bachelor of Engineering.
Undergrad Major : Computer Science. But choose diverse set of electives with focus on Mathematics and Economics.
Undergrad Extra-Curriculars : Represented College at several national sports meet in Athletics.
Headed a division of student NGO.
Elected for Sports Secretary of hostel of about 200 students and became a part of Student Gymkhana(Union).
Was also actively involved in other clubs and organizations.

GMAT : 710(q50= 92%ile, v35 = 74%ile)
AWA : 5.5(77%ile)

Work Achievements :
Overall WorkEx now : 3 years 1 month. Will be 4 years when I join.
Working with a fortune 500 Software Major. Listed among top 5 in Forbes Software & Programming list.
Was promoted once after 2 years which is less than the avg time in the company.
Liased with an offshore team and managed the work assigned to them.
Collaborated with International teams.
Nominated for several awards.
Can get a decent reco from the immediate Manager.

Extra Curricular After grad :
Guided undergrad students of a local community college for a research project.
Treasurer at the local Toastmasters Club. Has chaired several contests.
Director of a global alumni event in which more than 700 alumni participated.

Because of the following reasons, I am contemplating whether I should appl

1. Unable to distinguish profile from a typical Indian male IT applicant.
2. Less Work-Ex and do not have any stellar achievements at work.
3. Do not have a clear target about the profession I want to pursue after my Bschool. I am confused whether I should choose Marketing or Consulting with longterm focus on technology. I feel this would reflect in my essays.
4. Average GMAT( Should I give another attempt at GMAT to push my score beyond 730. I was consistently scoring arnd 730's in prep tests. I feel that I can push my score if I take one more attempt.)
5. No International Work-ex.
6. Has been working under one Manager for the last 3 years. Do not have any other senior person who knows me well enough to give a reco.

I am confused whether I should apply this year or not. If I decide to apply next year, what additional steps should I take to strengthen my profile in general for top 10 schools in US.

Regards,
