Can anyone please evaluate my profile

by slayera6 » Wed Aug 01, 2012 5:51 pm
Education:
MS in Mechanical Engineering- Univ of Michigan- GPA:3.89
B.Tech in Mechanical Engineering- Jawaharlal Nehru Tech Univ- Percentage- 75.67%

Work Experience:
Currently working at Ford Motor Company, Dearborn,USA as a Team Leader since 1 year.
I've worked at Chrysler Corporation as a Product Development Engineer for 6 months.
I've worked as a Research Assistant during my MS at Univ of Michigan, Dearborn for 2 years.

Extra Cirricular:
I've served as a Vice President of Indian Graduate Student Association for 1 year.
I served as a Mentor for a Robotics Club.
I've organised many technical festivals during my Bachelor's.

Achievements:
Promoted to team leader in just 4 months of joining Ford Motor Company.

GMAT:
Yet to be given.

My question is, would my part time work experience as a Reasearch Assistant count towards my work experience while applying to universities? Can my Master's degree add value to get an admit in Universities? Right now i am interested in applying to ISB- Hyderabad and IIM- Ahmedabad.
Harvard and Stanford would be my second option( it may be exaggeration for my profile, but i want to see how much worth i am)
Looking forward to hear for an expert to evaluate my profile.
Thanks in advance.

Hi slayera6! Wow - 3.89 in mech eng at U Mich?!? That's pretty darn impressive. You're likely to rack up a healthy GMAT score to go along with that. Nice job on the academics.

The problem is that your profile is incredibly common - we see this really quite often: Indian guy goes to good college -> U.S. for an engineering Master's -> a good job or two in some U.S. companies Even the "organized festivals" thing is exceedingly common - we're seeing stuff here that plenty of others have in their bkgrds too. It's great that you've got this but it's just a starting point. Would need to know more.

You're competing against a gazillion other guys like you. Thus, we honestly can't evaluate much of anything from what you've provided - typically we actually need to see the essays before we can say for sure whether someone from this oversubscribed pool would have a chance at HBS or Stanford. ISB is in the same category. The schools rely on lots of different things to evaluate the profile of guys like you and we just don't have enough to go on here to know if you have a chance for one of these top-top programs (yes we put ISB in nearly the same category as HBS/GSB when we're talking about a profile like yours - you do have an advantage with the connections to name-brand US firms, ISB will appreciate that, may give you some edge - HBS/GSB it won't matter - we have little knowledge of the IIMs so will leave those to others to comment on).

No, the research assistant job is not considered "employment" for the purposes of calculating how much work experience, though it does add value that you worked during school. They'll only count your actual F/T post-school jobs when adding up your "years of exp".

ISB cares about career goals so if you want to tell us why you want an MBA then maybe we can offer at least a little insight; the other schools will want to see how you're distinctive and accomplished. The fact you were promoted fast is a good sign. Do you have other evidence like that from your recent past?

A high GMAT will obviously be helpful but that alone doesn't write a ticket anywhere - it just lets you play the game. You should be able to do fine with that though. The challenge is doing GMAT prep and also writing essays at the same - everyone needs to get started on essays NOW - everyone should be actively working towards Rd 1 apps particularly for these super competitive schools.

Not sure any of this is helpful - feel free to add to this if you have more you can offer re: how your profile is fabulous :-D and we'll see if it changes the story in any obvious way.

Hi,

Your GPA is impressive. Masters from US especially Univ of Michigan will help you differentiate from many other Indian applicants. But at the same time your Teaching assistant work ex will not be counted towards your full time experience.

Hence you total work ex ( assuming 1.5 yrs as of now) is too less to apply to ISB. For IIMA you are not even eligible as minimum work ex required for people with masters if 5 yrs ( otherwise 6 yrs).

So, wait for atleast one more year and focus on the GMAT.

If I read what you are writing correctly and you would choose ISB Hyderabad and IIM-Ahmedabad over HBS and Stanford, then you should probably focus on ISB Hyderabad and IIM-Ahmedabad which are much less selective and which you have a much greater chance getting accepted.
