GMAT Score 640 - Profile evaluation

by Miss Sundaram » Thu May 24, 2012 12:15 am
Hi,

I am basically from IT Consulting/ Audit background. I scored 680-690 in the mock tests but ended up with a 640 in the real GMAT.

My profile is as below:
1. 2 year work experience at a big-four reputed audit firm in Management Consulting-IT Advisory domain. Good performance ratings.
2. Currently selected for an international assignment to UK. (poised to start in September, 2012).
3. Professional certifications - CISA, ITIL v3
4. B.Sc (Information Systems Management) and Post Graduate Diploma in IT (distance learning)
5. Extra-curricular activities - music, dance.
6. Participated in community activities

Target universities:
1. Carnegie Mellon University
2. Texas A&M
3. University of Michigan-Ross
4. kellogg
5. Oxford - Said

Now, since my GMAT score is a limiting factor, should I retake the GMAT? I believe my profile is unique. Will it help?

Thank you.

If you want to increase your odds at your target schools, which indeed are among the best b-schools in the world, then yes, I would try to get at least in the high 600s particularly since your practice tests indicate you can achieve this score. Your WE is good, but you will be competing at these schools with accountants from Big four firms with 5 years WE and hailing from who-knows-where top UG institutions. You didn't list all your details, but your profile is not coming across as all that unique at first blush. more than half of applicants to b-school come from a consulting/banking/accounting background.
