Advice on re-taking the GMAT

by ishitaJPM » Sun Nov 11, 2012 5:54 am
Hi Stacy,

I am a 24 year old Indian female with a Bachelors in Computer Engineering from Nanyang Technological University, Singapore on Singapore Airlines Scholarship. My GPA has been 3.28/4 and I got a GMAT score of 700(Verbal 38, Quant 48) on my first attempt in GMAT. I have had 2.5 years of work experience in J.P.Morgan as an analyst for the e-trading Futures and Options business on a role which is mostly on the technical side. The role has involved working with a global team and catering to client needs from regions like Korea, Japan etc. I was taken into the J.P.Morgan Corporate Development Program and I have constantly played a big role in the graduate program by being the lead Organizer of networking events for the graduate enabling them to speak over topics like career advancement and job rotation and progression responsibilities with the senior management. I have also played an active role in organizing Philanthropy Events for J.P.Morgan Singapore and played an active role in the social Responsibility wing.

My dream schools are INSEAD and the London Business School and my target year of intake is 2014.

Do you think I need to re-take my GMAT as it is just a border line 700? In case not I would spend my time on raising my profile by maybe doing additional activities for philanthropy committee and trying to become more involved in alumni affairs of NTU, the school I did my Bachelors from.

Any feedback would be appreciated. Thanks a lot for your help Stacy.

Regards,
Ishita

Hi ishitaJPM,

Thanks for posting. With the GMAT, it's important to remember that your highest score is self-reported on your application, This means that admissions teams will only focus on your best score, which is why we recommend that if you believe you can improve your score by 30+ points, it can be beneficial to take the test again.

This being said, you do have a strong score (business schools like to see at least a 700), and your GMAT score is not the only part of your application an admissions team will consider. If on practice tests though you were scoring significantly higher, you may want to take the test again.
