-CMU
-Ross
-Darden
-Kelley
-UT-Austin

Hello!

Congrats on the big improvement on your GMAT score. A 670 makes you competitive at most of the schools you've listed, though of course, if you could improve to 700, that would improve your chances at the more competitive schools like LBS, Ross and Duke. Still, even with your current score, LBS would be a slight stretch, but the others you definitely have a fair chance. Academically, your profile is average.

Your professional experience is very interesting - sounds like you do a fair amount of project and team management/leading, and that you have been given a fair amount of leadership responsibility of late. I think it will be important to try to position yourself as much as possible as a project lead/project manager if possible (rather than a purely technical professional). Being an Indian male engineer, the bar is a bit higher for distinguishing yourself. Still, your experience is different as it doesn't seem like software development strictly.

You were very involved in college and have had some great leadership and athletic achievements during that time. I'm not sure when you finished college, but the only weakness I see is that there is not as strong a leadership/extracurricular involvement streak after college. Basketball is good -- are you the captain of the team? And Teach for India should also bring some good stories.

I think overall that your school list is quite well rounded -- LBS, Duke and Ross are going to be your stretch schools with the 670 score (though they are within reach), and I think Darden, Cornell, Kelley will be your targets. The rest fall more into the category of safety schools.

Hope this helps!

Hi Mili,

Thanks a lot for the evaluation.
I am not at all into software development. We design and construct various hydrocarbon plants. I just used my software skills to develop an application. Because of my experience in the Oil & Gas sector, I think it would be wise to list a career in Operations Management as my post MBA goal. Please let me know what do you think.

And yes, I was the captain of my college basketball team. I graduated in 2010.

Thanks again.
Abby

Your career goal should lead logically from your past experience, experience you'll gain in business school, and your short term career goal. I'm not sure that you have to pick Operations Management as your future career goal -- that really depends on many factors: what you actually want to do, what makes sense with your background/interest, what you can reasonably achieve with an MBA and short term career in xyz, and also what is ambitious enough that those two interim steps are required. It's a bit of a longer discussion required to help you figure out what to write about for your career goal, but you should consider all these factors and choose something that tells a coherent and believable story.

Best of luck,
Mili
