Hello, and thank you very much for your time.
I've just graduated from Cal State University Long Beach with an Economics degree after transferring from Orange Coast College (a community college in southern California).
GPA at O.C.C. 3.33, GPA at CSULB 3.89, Overall GPA 3.59, Economics GPA 3.75.
How do these numbers look to ad com relative to better schools?
I am 33 years old and have a non-traditional work background that I would like you to comment on in relation to business school applications. I joined the Marine Corps almost immediately after high school, took and passed an aviation electronics related curriculum, and maintained and troubleshot all electronic systems on a particular Marine Corps helicopter during my 5 year enlistment.
After the Marine Corp for the last ten years, I have been working in a similar capacity on corporate jets as a Senior Avionics Technician. During the last seven years, I have been working at least full time and sometimes much more, while pursuing a degree (originally electrical engineering, then I switched to Economics).
Both in the Marine Corps and at the business jet company that I currently work for, I have had leadership related duties such as training junior personnel and coordinating complex aircraft maintenance related projects.
However hands on aircraft maintenance, although I have been very successful with it, is not my passion. There is also very little opportunity for career growth much higher than lower level management. Now that I have my Economics degree, I am looking to either switch to a different department at my company such as finance, or look for other opportunities.
So, there are three reasons I am pursuing an MBA. One, to increase my chances for career growth within the aerospace industry to the executive level. Two, to better prepare myself for possibly starting a business within the general aviation industry. And three, to possibly facilitate a transfer to another industry entirely.
I am currently studying for the GMAT. My target range is 630 to 690, and will apply to part time programs- I am looking at Claremont Graduate University and the University of California Irvine, but am open to other schools and even relocating to another state.
What will my work background look like to ad com? Do I need an actual managerial title or post baccalaureate work experience to be competitive?
Thanks again!
