Hello everyone,

I just got back from the testing center and scored a 700 (48Q, 38V). I am somewhat disappointed because I got 760 on the GMATPrep and similar on other practice tests but that's life! From research I suspect that it may not be a good idea to take it again? If anyone has input please advise :)

I am 1 year out of school (one of the top UC's) and I want to go to attend a top 15 MBA program eventually. I have been working at an investment bank and recently got a new job doing international sales&trading which I am starting next week. This involves work on the phone with clients and travel which might be valuable in my development. At the bank I was received a raise within 6 months because of performance and also led a team of interns. I realize that I need a few more years of work experience before applying. Anyone insight about this type of work experience in the eyes of adcom?

Outside of work and academics I am an active alumni of my business organization and provide counseling for current members. My work takes 12-17 hours a day so I don't have much free time to do anything else -- I was hoping for some suggestions on other extracurriculars that could strengthen my application!

Thanks in advance for all the help everyone.

Hi,

We would say that both your GMAT score and low work ex will work against you while applying to top 15 B schools. We would suggest waiting for atleast 1 yr to add more work ex and also retaking GMAT.

During that one yr you can try enhancing your extra curricular achievements. You cant build a new one but try figuring out what have you done already and take that to the next level.

I see no reason why you would not take the GMAT again with that kind of upside versus your practice tests. Plus you need to wait anyway to apply with more work experience so yes retake the GMAT.

In terms of extra curriculars, since you are spending so much time at work, see if you can get involved with a volunteer program through work, or organize your peers in some way to volunteer math tutoring at the offices or on one saturday each month at a public school. Whatever it is, it should be fun for you.

Good Luck!

For community service, consider leveraging whatever corporate social responsibility initiatives your investment bank has by participating in these events and, even better, leading some of them.

Also, consider applying round 1 for as many schools as possible, especially those schools like Columbia which admit a higher percentage in their Early Decision round.

Good luck,
