Need opinions from experts

Hi

I recently took the test (1st attempt) and scored a modest 720 (Q50, V 37, AWA 5.0). I am primarily targeting the ISB program in Hyderabad. Please do let me know your opinion whether a 720 is sufficient, or do I need to improve my score by a further 10-20 points; I think I can improve the score by another 20 points, if I take out a good amount of time from my consulting work.

I am a 29 year old male from India, with around 7 years of experience post my engineering (Civil Honors, a 5 year program from CEPT www.cept.ac.in). Out of the 7 years, 4 were spent with the prominent fortune 500 companies as a business analyst, and subsequently as a project manager. Since last two year, I have been running a small consulting firm that provides services in the areas such as CDM, Green Buildings, Solid waste management, Infra projects, etc. I am also a certified LEED AP (BD+C) from US green building council. I was the president of the student's council during my engineering, and also have been part of social activities while studying (Post earthquake damage assessment, school vulnerability assessment, lake rejuvenation programs, etc.). On the sports front, I have a general participation record with few certificates for chess and TT at school and college level. My academic records are decent with a 85% in 12th (CBSE) and a 69% during graduation (top 5 rank during all semester and highest in internship and thesis semesters).

Please let me know your opinion whether I should proceed with the current profile and GMAT score, or improve them before applying.

Sincere Thanks & Best Regards
sourabh

Sourabh,

Your 720 should be sufficient. I 10-point improvement would not really help you, and it sounds like raising your score would require a lot of sacrifice on your part. A 720 is a competitive score at ISB (and most anywhere).

Good luck,

Hi Saurabh

when applying to top schools a score above 700 is desirable. However it is not just the academics but beyond the academics that will help you in determining your candidature. Often candidate focus heavily on gat and sideline other important aspects of the applications. It's good that you have scored well and now should focus on other aspects of the application to ensure your candidature in the desired institutes.

Also most of the Indian applicants are from engineering background with a good 4-5 years of work experience. Although it is not just the work experience that counts but also what you did there like-what were your achievements, what initiative you took, what changes you drove in your workplace etc. So if you can show that in 7 years you have demonstrated the skills business schools are looking for you could put in a strong set of essays.

Hence the quality of your work, your academics and beyond academics will play an important role in determining your candidature.

If you are feel you can improve your score no harm doing that given the fact that other aspects of your application are up to the mark.
