MBA - CANADA

by Kostas » Sun Jan 23, 2011 9:22 pm
Hello everybody.

I am 24 and I am interested in obtaining an MBA degree in Ontario. I have applied at two Universities.

Both schools require previous work experience.
I don't have any special work experience in my resume. Apart from a 6month work that I did as a student at a bank, I' ve got nothing special to mention.
Have provided good academic references though and also great references from my previous bank manager.
I have a GPA 7.2 out of 10 (this is 2.88 out of 4) in Accounting.

The minimum that these schools want in the GMAT is 600. I took the GMAT in a rush a week ago and got a bad 510. Despite my bad mark, I contacted both schools and they told me that I can take the test again, as long as I provide them the new results within the deadlines.

If I manage to get over 700 do I have more chances to participate in these programs? Or will they immediately reject me because I do not have the years of work experience that they require ?

Any ideas, whether professional or not, I am all ears.

Kostas.

Kostas,

A very high GMAT would certainly help your case, but it all depends on how firm they are about applicants having work experience. Some schools don't bend in that regard, others will admit a small percentage of young applicants. BusinessWeek online carries data on age range of applicants at most schools or you could ask the schools themselves whether they ever admit applicants with no work experience. It's a fair question, and no harm in asking it.

Good luck,

Dear Mr Paul,

Thank you very much for the reply. This is actually the first reply that I have gotten in this website, and I am glad that I got it from an MBA expert.

You are totally right. I should have asked both universities if they accept students without any professional qualifications. I probably didn't do it because the MBA program of one of these schools is ranked in the TOP100 MBA world rankings and the other University is one of the best in Canada. So I thought that their answers would definitely be negative.

On the one hand I am thinking that it' d be better to ask. On the other hand I have already started studying for the GMAT again. So I' ll probably make the question after I take the exam in April. I really don' t want to screw this attempt. It's better to learn something negative when I am done with the test because I may use my new score again in the future for a Phd.

I would like to thank you for once again for sharing your time and thoughts with me.

Kind regards,

Kostas.
