Profile Evaluation. Please help me!

Greetings!

I would definitely appreciate your assessment of my profile.

Nationality: Indian

Age: 27 (at entry)

Work Experience: 3 years (at entry) with top consulting firms (among Big 4). I completed my graduation from a top deemed university majoring in Civil & Structural Engineering (6.5/10). After that, I started my professional career as an Associate Analyst in the world's biggest consulting firm. After an year, I was promoted to a level higher (Analyst) for the excellent work & contribution to the firm. I have earned 'Applause' award for successfully completing a critical project that impacted the firm, & have earned a 'Certificate of Excellence' for mastering TOEIC. Currently, I am working as a 'Product Specialist'. I want to continue for another year and then apply for a b-school. I plan to apply starting Oct 2011.

I have a GMAT score of 730. I have involved in other extracurricular activities while in college & during summer.

I want to know, with this profile/background, what b-schools should I aim for? My preferences are:

1. HBS
2. MIT Sloan
3. Stanford

Please let me know if there are other b-schools that fit my background.

Your strong metrics certainly qualify you for application to the schools on your list although your work experience is still slightly below the average in length. However, I always advise my clients to think about their objectives. If you are determined to earn an MBA to build and broaden your skills you need to add a couple of safety schools to your list. The schools you are targeting turn away literally thousands of exceptionally talented and qualified individuals simply because of the limitations of class size. Many schools will tell you that they could build a perfect class, throw it out and start over again and build an equally strong one from the remaining applicants. That means that many factors beyond your control will affect their decision.

If, on the other hand, you are very happy in your career and do not want to invest the time and money unless you can attend a top three school, then recognize that you may in fact get turned down at all three.

As for picking safety schools, your best bet would be to focus on the field you want to study and see which schools have the strongest reputations there. You can find out what companies interview on campus and where most of the graduates work. Those factors can help you pinpoint a fit based on something other than pure ratings.

Dear Tani,

Thank you so much for the reply!! Your practical approach is really impressive. I had not considered the idea of 'safety' schools at all. Now that you have advised me, I will certainly do my homework on that one. For me, personal excellence matters the most. If I am able to perform & excel in whatever I undertake, in whichever school I am, I know I will be successful and no less than a graduate from a top notch school. I aim to get into field of Strategy Consulting/Marketing and Finance being the last priority-after I have my MBA.
