Hi,
I am in the process of applying for MBA programs starting in Fall 2010. Please give me some feedback on my profile:
Nationality: Dual citizenship, American and EU national
GPA: 3.0 in Electrical Engineering at a state school
GMAT: 710 Q48 V40
Age: 35 at matriculation
Work Experience:
3.5 years in oil field services industry at Schlumberger with significant responsibility and leadership experience. I was promoted once during this time and selected to manage part of a high profile project.
3 years as a Product Engineer for a contractor in the mining industry.
6 months supervisory position at a mine in Indonesia for Freeport McMoran.
+ whatever I do for the next year (I was layed off because of the economic crisis)
I spent a significant time abroad with my jobs. I spent 3 months in Egypt and a month in France when I worked at Schlumberger. I spent a total of 3 months in Africa when I worked as a Product Engineer.
I don't have much formal EC experience. I spend most of my free time travelling, catching up with friends and hiking. I am a citizen of Malta (EU country) and I have spent over 2 years there, mostly during college.
So far I have really enjoyed the international component of my career and I would like to go somewhere that is strong in international business. I am also interested in sales and marketing or general management. I would like to depart from the Oil/Mining industries but probably still stay in a technology related industry since I studied electrical engineering. Basically, I would like to tweak my brand a bit, when I hand someone my resume with an electrical engineering degree they automatically think that I am the "technical guy". I don't mind a job with some technical component but I enjoy working with people and I would like my brand to line up with this. I am not interested in I Banking, Management Consulting or any other role where I would end up working 70-80 hours a week. To go along with that, I am fine with not making $150k a year when I graduate, $90-100k with a good work/life balance is perfect. I am interested in the programs in Europe and I am particularly interested in the programs in Spain (ESADE, IESE, IE). I would really like to pick up a second language and I think being there would be the easiest way. I would like to do a full time program because I want to do an internship to facilitate changing industries/job function, I have the money to go to school without working and I would enjoy the social aspects much more.
I have also considered Thunderbird, UT Austin and ASU(carey) since I am from Arizona. Do you have any other recommendations? What are my chances at the schools I mentioned and any others that you think might be a good fit?
I didn't do as well as I thought I would on the GMAT. Would it be worth it to take it again and perhaps get in the 720-740 range?
