Please evaluate my profile for TOP 5

by hofimax » Sat Feb 14, 2009 7:10 am
Hi, I am a 23-year old mal student from Austria / Europe and I plan to apply to the top 5 business schools in R1 of 2009. Please check my profile for any realistic chances...

Background:
GMAT: 690 (Q 46 / V 38), AWA 5.5
TOEFL: 113
Magister (~MSc): Management Science from best Austrian university (major: finance, operation management)
GPA: 3.5 / 4

I want to work in consulting or general management in IT related fields or finance. Workplace US or Europe.

Work Experience:
- 2001: Started at the age of 16 as a developer for local internet service provider besides high school = 4 years part-time job
- 2006: Founded partnership (3 persons) in Vienna besides my studies to consult in internet technologies / platforms. Revenue ~80,000$/year. (had some major clients like Austrian broadcasting and university) = 3 years part-time.

Additional Experience:
- 6 times Austrian champion and several medals at European Championships pool-billiards. Was in national team for 6 years, 1 year team leader.
- Was coach for young pool-billiards players and also conducted workshops for several years.
- Several honours with distinction in music (played the clarinet for 9 years). Was part of an ensemble and an orchestra for ~4 years.
- Co-organizer of an annually non-mainstream music festival.

Questions:
1) Do I have a chance at top 5 programs?
2) Do you think being Austrian influences my chances?
3) Do you suggest any improvements that you find are lacking?

THANKS!!

To answer your questions:

1) Yes you do, but don't apply only in the top 5. Competition is fierce.
2) Yes. Austria doesn't send many applicants to US business schools so given that schools desire diversity, you're being Austrian is somewhat of a plus.
3) Although most programs at this point do not have a minimum full-time experience requirement, some do. Make sure you apply to the "top 5" that do not have that requirement (HBS, Stanford, Wharton, Chicago ). Additionally you have worked throughout college so you need to make the most of it in your essays.

BTW, Accepted has an editor in Paris who has worked with many European applicants to top US MBA programs.

Best,
Linda
