I was wondering, what is the significance of the different application rounds. Especially in the top schools - should I do whatever it takes to make it to the first deadline?

Dear cloodle,

It is better to apply in the second round than rush to get it in for the first round. There is no real advantage to round 1 over round 2. However any round after the second, there is a disadvantage as the number of seats left is quite low.

Are we considering the first round the early decision round, or the first round the round immediately after?

If the school I were applying to had the deadlines as October (early decision), November, and then January, would there be any disadvantage applying in January?

Dear emw13,

For some schools, there is an early decision round and then a first round. But most schools have just the first round. Generally speaking, you want to get your application in by the December/January deadline. For this year with the expected increase in applications, I would suggest getting it in as soon as possible, but don't compromise quality.
