Hello! Lisa, or Stacy - I'm looking for your help in spotting the weakest area of my application package. Please share your wisdom in how I could improve my chances for admission. My goal is HBS, full-time MBA.

Name: Robert
Age: 23
Looks: Devilishly Good
Sense of Humor: Keen as ever

- GPA: 4.0 out of 4.0
- Major: Geography: Resource & Environmental Studies (BSc)
- School: Texas State University

- GPA: 4.0 out of 4.0 (expected, graduation in May 2009)
- Major: International Studies (MA) (interdisciplinary mix of History, Political Science, and Communication courses)
- School: Texas State University

- GMAT: 710 46Q (77%) 40V (89%) Date Taken: Aug. 4th 2008

- Resume highlights:

- including company name, job titles and promotions:

Executive Team for a small internet business selling carbon offsets (side project, almost extracurricular in nature)

Research Project Manager for Texas State University (promoted from a lowly grant tech when I started working for the research center whilst still an undergraduate) currently lead a team of 10 on a research project for the Texas Department of Transportation. Entails the planning of everything, hiring, training, software and database programming, making deals for data collection, liasing with TxDOT, traveling for over a week at a time on the road with my crew, visiting the major cities in Texas. In one week we drove from San Marcos to the McAllen, Tx to collect data, then to El Paso, Tx, then to Amarillo, Tx, and back to San Marcos.

Operations Division Intern for the United Nations World Food Programme in Rome, Italy.

Summer Intern for NASA Johnson Space Center - Mission Control, Jupiter Research Facility (developed prototype with my team for an information management tool that was later patented by NASA)

- extracurricular involvements:

Graduate House Representative (Student Government at Texas State Univ.)

During Undergrad I was the Vice President of Ultimate Frisbee, and played the key role in a political changing of the guard that took place between the pot smoking frisbee kids and the athletes that wanted to put our team at the top of the national rankings and did so. Also put together a presentation that upped our funding in my final year.

- awards, patents, publications, etc...
multiple scholarships from my university (in excess of 10k)
conversational Italian

- interesting personal facts - countries lived in, challenges faced, unusual interests:

I have dual nationality with Italy and the United States.
I lived in Rome for 6 months and have traveled abroad in Europe solo many a times, visiting the French Riviera, all of Italy, Sicily, and various parts of England.
I manage a local rock band, and more recently I co-wrote, directed, and starred in an independent film I made with my friends.
I play chess everyday, and I also play the cello.
I would consider myself very physically fit, I lift weights 3 times a week and run long distance.

Dear Robert,

I would say your weakness is probably your minimal professional work experience. It is unclear from your post if you are currently working full-time and going to school part-time or if your job related to your masters program. If the position is not a full-time, professional job then you will be considered someone with 0 years of experience. With less than 2 years of work experience, it will be imperative you highlight your successes in what you have done and your future leadership potential. Likewise, at 23 you are on the low end of the age range, so demonstrating the maturity to handle business school is key.

HBS does admit students every year with no full-time professional work experience. You seem to fit the profile for this group, so be sure to put together a strong application package compelling them to offer you a seat.

Good luck,
Lisa
