Baruch and Fordham. Do I have any chances ?

Hi all,

I took the GMAT last week and scored 570. I am French and I have two years of experience in corporate finance in a startup. Basically, I am running the finance department with the CFO. I had a 3.6 GPA and did a french american business school in Paris. Also my toefl score is 100, but I am taking it again in two weeks.

I want to apply at Baruch and Fordham. Do I have any chances ?

I am aware that my gmat is quite low and I don't think I have time to retake it. Do you think with strong essays and great recommendations, I could still be accepted ?

Hey there,

So your GMAT isn't great but you definitely have other stuff working in your favor! If you can really showcase the scope and impact you had with the startup and lock in some solid recommendations, you should have a shot. Your 570 is in play and its offset (somewhat) by your undergrad GPA. So is it a flag? Yes. Will it keep you out? Not necessarily. It would also be really useful to demonstrate interest - so visit, talk to students / alumni, etc.

Hi Bhavik,

Thank you so much for you quick answer.
I already wrote to the Baruch admissions. I asked questions and told them I would be in NYC during New Year's Eve and I really want to visit the campus and meet with them. I did the same with Fordham but they have not answered yet.
I also emailed 4 students from Baruch and they all answered to my questions.
It's too bad that they do not have any events in Paris.

Anyway, thanks a lot and let me know if you have any advices.

Hi Lucile,

You're very welcome! Generally speaking, no, I wouldn't recommend that. Especially because you're applying so soon. But if you were a year or so away, you could ask what steps they might recommend or what their concerns are. Overall, however, we don't really suggest it. Because let's face it, you know how they feel about it, right? Not exactly a shocking revelation on that front.

I have a European client with a score similar to yours and Baruch and Fordham are actually two of the schools we are working on with him. I encourage you to apply! I also want to let you know that I'll be in Paris/Europe in March 2015 for 7 weeks and would love any advice you have on meeting up with prospective students while I'm there!
