Hello,

Please evaluate my profile below for full time MBA programs to start Fall 2011.

I am an early career applicant (will have 3 years of experience when I start):
3.5 undergrad GPA in Chemistry, minor in Econ from Dartmouth
760 GMAT (51Q/44V)
25 years old, Vietnamese-American male (US Citizen)
Will have 3 years of work experience in operations research consulting by the time I start next fall:
-early promotion to associate/jr. manager (1.5 years)
-placed in the top bracket of the bonus pool each year I was employed
-currently lead project teams to deliver consulting work
-participated in sales work (presentations/conference calls)
-presented to executives/C-levels on engagements
-did some consulting gigs internationally
-took initiative and spearheaded the standardization of a number of internal organizational processes in my company (developed standard content for proposals, created technical documents for common/standard consulting projects, created process around new employee recruitment, consolidated all of the group's research findings into one database, etc.).

From an extracurricular standpoint, I do a bit of volunteer work every Saturday and Sunday. I don't put in crazy hours toward EC's due to my workload but I try to volunteer 5-10 hours a week during the weekends. In college I was an executive editor of an entirely new publication so I led the entire process for my segment of the journal (recruiting editors, selecting papers, leading the editorial process, etc.). No substantial extracurriculars beyond that, however.

I'm looking into the schools below:
HBS
Wharton
Kellogg
Sloan
Columbia
Tuck

I know it's an uphill climb with only 3 years of experience. Any thoughts on my chances as I stand now, in terms of safety/reasonable/reach? As an aside, do you have any thoughts on my chances if I apply w/ 4 years of experience (by waiting an extra year)? Do you think that would matter?

Thanks for your help.

Hi,

Thanks for your post. I have a few additional questions for you. Why do you want to go to bschool? What are your short and long term goals? Why the schools you've listed? In other words, what attracts you to them?

Thanks,

Stacey

Thanks for your reply Stacey. I currently work in operations research consulting, where we focus on the nitty-gritty of efficiencies in an organization taking on an analytical approach to our client projects, showing how they affect the company's bottom line and returns on investment. I have done well in my job and have appreciated viewing organizations from this perspective. Moving forward in my career, I would like to hone my skills in high level strategy/strategic management with an emphasis on financial analysis. My medium-long term career goal is to work in internal strategy for a large bank or financial institution. Business school would give me the foundation that I need to build those skills which I feel is the missing piece in my career.

The schools I listed have one of the following: a strong emphasis on finance, a strong emphasis on management, or a strong emphasis on strategy theory (while still being respectable in the other two). These are attractive to me as they are competencies that I would like to gain before moving into an internal strategy position. Additionally, the proximity to New York allows good access to the financial sector, with the exception of Kellogg, which I'm still iffy about to be honest.

Thanks again, and I hope that helps.

Hi,

Thanks for the additional information. It sounds like you've got your goals ironed out and know exactly what you want to get out of bschool. This is great because not only does it help you narrow down your school selection, it will also make writing all those "Why MBA" essays a lot easier.

I think you've put together a solid list of programs and it's clear you have done your research. Given your professional experience and academic background this list seems logical and sound. Given the competitive nature of bschool admissions the last couple of years, you may wish to consider adding a couple of "safety" schools to your list as well.

Best,

Stacey

Thanks Stacey. What would be a good safety for my profile? I was thinking of adding either Stern or Haas. Should I be more conservative?

Hi,

I'd be a bit more conservative. Given how competitive Bschool admissions can be these days the term "safety" doesn't really exist. I'd suggest you look at schools in the top 15-20 range for your back up options.

Best,

Stacey
