MBA Admissions 2012 ....Urgent

by kriti87 » Sat Oct 15, 2011 10:04 pm
Hi,

I am a candidate from India and I have been working in Technology consulting since the past 16 months. I am interested in applying for an MBA in 2012. I am currently confused between what specializations would suit my current profile. I have done my engineering in Computer Science from India and I have a good academic plus extra curricular background. I am confused between Finance and Information Management/Information systems specializations. I am more inclined towards Finance but I cannot come up with any solid justification as to why I want to take up this specialization.

Please advice...

Thanks

You will get sufficient time to choose/change your specialization during your MBA. Part of the MBA experience consists of gaining enough knowledge so as to make an 'informed decision' for your career.

You will, though, need to be clear about your goals in your application essays. If you are inclined towards finance, then research about the industry & make sure that you can demonstrate a certain connect between your pre & post MBA career paths. Solid justification is only possible if you have taken some steps to know more about the field (internship/pro-bono work/EC etc)

Good Luck!

To borrow a techie phrase, determining a specialization is often "reverse-engineered". Look at the industry and specifically jobs you wish to obtain post-MBA and then choose a specialization that will enable you to get there. This specialization, along with other factors, helps you choose which MBA programs you wish to target.

Choosing a Specialization? Well I have a traditional route to explore that. Asking questions till the end

Do you have a liking for number crunching?
Do you like to work in teams or u like to work alone?
Do you find it easy to convince people to do what you want?
Do you have a creative mind?
Do you like travelling?
Do you find it easy to talk to strangers?

Apart from this the general wisdom says

1. You will be having introductory subjects from all streams in your first year, and probably thus will have some idea of each stream before you need to select a stream. You will know what you can extend and apply practically and what you have a tough time even understanding... I was personally suffering in OB

2. Based on your prior workex or grad degree, you may have developed a liking/dislike.

2. Maybe your insti. may have some criteria for specialisation, for the hotly contested streams...like its possible that if a particlar stream has more applicants than seats, your Bschool may decide a filter...be aware of these criteria if any, ask the current students if you would like to...

3. If you still feel you are indifferent choosing among streams...then your BSchool will be known best for a particular stream, have the best faculties, or maybe one stream has the best placements among all streams...to be on a safe side you may want to major in that stream then...

4. In case you have a Major/Minor spec. concept, you would do well to diversify risk and choose a good minor spec....enquire with current students that maybe some good companies may place a preimum on majors spec. as opposed to minors spec....then take a decision...

5. The world is random.

6. Read a few Why Consulting? Why Marketing blogs forums articles and see if they stir your soul.

To answer the last part:-

Go to the career services page of the website and look for the jobs being posted there by seeking recruiters. It will give you the exact info you are looking for. Which college? What profile? Job description offered?

You can also look at some of the past MBA grads and try to explore their profile through people searching. Look for people with whom you find profile resemblance.

Thanks for your advice. I will definitely make use of it. Another question I had was - can you rate the following Master's programs? I am considering a Master's in Management as well since Work ex is so mandatory for an MBA.
1. MSc in Management from HEC,Paris
2. MSc in Information systems from Hong Kong Institute of Science and Tech
3. Master's of IT in Business(Finance) from Singapore Management University

I can't look at the Master's programs in the US because many of them prefer a GRE score and I have only given the GMAT.

All of these are very good courses. HEC is my fav

Yes kriti, which one of them prefer GRE.

I think GMAT scores is also accepted. But there are colleges which accept only GRE scores. So check it on a-la-cart basis.

Tepper, UCLA, Barauch, and Boston University...these MFE take GMAT.

I know some of them accept the GMAT but i had wanted to apply to these schools in Round 1. So now I'm thinking of applying to the following schools based on various factors :

HEC Paris MSc in Management
Hong Kong Insititute's Msc in Information Systems
Singapore Management University's Masters of IT in Business
ESCP Europe - Msc in Management
IE Business School, Spain - Masters in International Management

I wanted a review of these programmes or atleast some links that I could check out and get some honest feedback on the curriculum and ROI of these programmes?

My current mock GMAT scores are 640 and on the actual GMAT I scored a 600..and I currently have 16 months of work experience....

Hi

In case you want to work in France, HEC has a great reputation and looks very good on your CV. I am sure a Master of management of that school will be a door opener to integrate a good first job.

Employment Facts & Figures from HEC Paris
74% of students found a job prior to graduation and the average salary was 67000$.
Sectors: Consulting (45%), Finance (18%), Real Estate (9%), Industry, Technology, Tourism, Luxury, Chemicals, Energy (4% each)
Functions: Consulting (45%), Finance (14%), Management / Administration (14%), Marketing (9%), Audit (9%).

Also, what about the other programs that I listed above? Any forums that I could check out..? The website that you directed me to does not list some of the programs like MITB and HKUST's MSc program etc..
