I am in a quandary and I need your advice. My GMAT is lower than the averages for my target schools, but I think I have a good story and my extracurricular experiences are excellent. Please give me any advice you may have for strengthening my application. (ie. Should I retake the GMAT, as I want to apply for fall 2011 admission? Should I take an additional course?) My recommendations should be very good.

Targets: (FT) Ross, Wisconsin, Darden and Stern via the Consortium application. (PT) Depaul, Booth and Kellogg.

Age: 26
Gender: Male
Ethnicity: 1st Gen Asian American,
GMAT: 650 (35v, 44q) - I have taken the exam three times. My scores are 590 and 650.
Work Experience: 5 years in Investment Management. I started as an operations intern and I have worked my way up to a trading assistant.
Undergrad GPA: 2.98 from a nationally known liberal arts college, my GPA shows growth in my 3rd and 4th years. I switched my major half way and attained dean's list status my last 2 years.

Extracurricular activities: Alumni chair/alumni board member of a national scholarship foundation whose purpose to train and identify high school youth and give them full tuition scholarships to college

As a Consortium applicant, you have a chance at the schools you mentioned. But the odds would be significantly better at a higher GMAT score (at say, 700). Your higher GMAT score will also address their potential concerns with your low GPA. What is the highest GMAT you ever got in practice tests? If getting a higher GMAT score proves very difficult for you, then it may be wiser to refocus on assmbling the best application. Among the FT schools, Wisconsin is your best shot.

You may have a better shot at PT. I am assuming you live in or near Chicago. All three PT programs you mentioned would be great choices and may be within reach with the current GMAT score. Only one caveat though: you may be among the youngest applying to the programs and may have to show that you have professional maturity and depth of experience consistent with the rest of your future classmates.

Anurag - Thanks for your input. My highest ever GMAT was a practice test taken March 2010, my score was 680. From your perspective, do you think I have enough time to prepare for another exam? Secondly, will schools worry if my scores begin to dip? i.e. my current score of 650 falls on subsequent exams or do schools only concern themselves with the highest score?
