Advice on Langone admission needed!

by lancy18 » Thu Jun 04, 2009 7:26 pm
I've taken the GMAT twice and scored 640 on both tries. My first try was in 2005 and I can't find the score report, but my second try was in 2008 and the breakout is Quantitative: 41, Verbal: 38, AWA: 4.5. I'd like to apply to Langone Spring 2010. The application deadline is September 15. I'd much rather spend the next few months working on my application than to study for the GMAT all over again. What are my chances of getting into Langone with my current GMAT score?

Undergrad is as follows:

Freshman Year, SUNY Buffalo, GPA: 3.9
Remaining 3 years at NYU CAS Economics major and double minor in Sociology and East Asian Studies, GPA: 3.57
Studied abroad in Beijing for a summer with Princeton University, GPA: 3.8
Took two accounting courses in 2005 at NYU SCPS, GPA: 4.0

Total work experience: 7 years (3 at UnitedHealth Group and 4 at Credit Suisse)

I've also noticed on the NYU website that they are still accepting Fall 2009 applicants. Are my chances better if I try to get in my application in for Fall 2009 or Spring 2010?

I am a 27 year old asian female.

Your help is much appreciated, thanks!

Dear lancy18,

It is really too late to apply for fall 2009. Even if NYU says it is still taking applications, there are so few seats left and thus the competition for those seats will be quite stiff. It would be better to apply for entry in 2010. Your GMAT is on the low side, but you have a high GPA and quite a bit of work experience. Be sure to convey your successful leadership and teamwork experiences in your essays as well as a solid rationale for getting your MBA in relation to your past experiences and future career goals. I think you have a chance, but you need to provide many reasons to offer you a seat and no reasons to pass on your application.

Good luck,
Lisa

Dear avolin,

I think you have a chance of being admitted if you submit a strong, overall application. Your GMAT is competitive and helps to mitigate your slightly below average GPA. It will be key for you to explain your rationale for getting an MBA in relation to your career goals as well as why now and why the part-time program at NYU. If you present a compelling case for admission and do not offer any reason to pass on you, then I think your chances are good.

Best of luck,
Lisa

Hello,

I'm looking to gauge the realistic chances of getting acceptance into some of my target schools when I apply this year (2010). I would like to apply in round 1 and have listed below my work and volunteer experience, as well as important stats.

Graduated UC Berkeley with a degree in Mass Communications, GPA of 3.5
Worked for Nielsen Mobile-Production Associate (07-08)
LookSmart (Account Coordinator then Promoted to Account Manager of Western Region) (08-09)
Pandora Radio (Campaign Manager-Inside Sales) (09-Present)

GMAT: 580
Marketing Chair-Northern Ca Chapter of 85 Broads; I help to promote and market all our events, geared towards professional women in all industries.
Other stats: 24 year old Chinese-Fijian American, female

I would like to apply to these schools based on my campus visits and their various offerings and programs:

1) Kenan Flagler
2) Haas
3) Georgetown
4) George Washington
5) Duke
6) Smith (maryland)

Please advise!

Dear islandgurl918,

I commend you for a good mix of reach and reasonable schools on your list. While your GPA is solid and your have some interesting work experience, I am concerned your GMAT score is going to hold you back from being admitted to a few of your target schools. It is possible you might be admitted with your current score if you have an otherwise stellar application, but I also think it is possible you might end up on the waitlist or miss out on an opportunity to even interview. You have some time to retake the GMAT and I encourage you to seriously consider doing so. If you could raise your score even 30 points, you would be in a much better position, but scoring a 640+ would be best. Finally, use the essays, recommendations and interviews to really shine and make your case to be in the MBA program--these parts of the application can mitigate a below average GMAT.

Good luck,
Lisa
