Report which GMAT Score?

by beatgmatyo » Mon Nov 30, 2009 10:04 pm
Hello Stacy,
Thank you for an awesome forum.

I have taken the GMAT twice and am in need of some advice on which score to report. I am applying second rounds and don't think I will have enough time to take the GMAT a third time. I come from a finance/investment banking/quant job at a bulge bracket bank, graduated from a top public undergrad, with extracurricular experience to balance out my application. The first time I took the GMAT, I scored a 700, but a very low quant percentile. With the 80/80 admissions rule in mind, I took it a second time but scored a 690. My quant score significantly improved at the cost of my verbal (I focused mainly on quant this time).

Which do you suggest I report to the schools? And if I do report the 700, is it worthwhile to note that my quant score improved on the second exam in the extra essay section?

Thank you in advance for your consideration.

Dear beatgmatyo,

This is a good question and I don't know that there is a right answer. I tend to lean with the highest score since your total score is what is used in calculations for school averages. If you sent the school your scores for your other test attempt, then they will see those scores also. You can also note it in an optional essay if you wish. However, it sounds like you do have evidence of quantitative aptitude from your professional work experience. Statistically, there is no significance between your 690 and 700 and it might not really make much difference if you choose to report the 690 instead. But, the 700 just "sounds" better. Go with your instinct on this one.

Best of luck,
Lisa

Thank you for your reply! I might decide to take the test again if time allots. Let's see!
